Pat Metheny’s Recording of John Zorn’s "Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20" Out Now
Pat Metheny’s recording of John Zorn’s Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20 from Zorn’s Masada Book Two is out now, their first collaboration. The New York Times calls it "audacious ... an impressive feat of imagination, and a strikingly clear distillation of both artists’ distinctive languages." The Independent says it's "dazzlingly virtuosic and evocative." All About Jazz calls it "a suite of half a dozen cinematic pieces, some of truly epic proportions ... the work of an artist who is doing anything but resting on his considerable laurels and accomplishments."

Pat Metheny, John Zorn Talk to New York Times About New Album; Featured on BBC Radio 6
Pat Metheny’s recording of John Zorn’s Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20 from Zorn’s Masada Book Two is out this week. Metheny and Zorn spoke with the New York Times about this, their first collaboration. "An impressive feat of imagination, and a strikingly clear distillation of both artists’ distinctive languages," writes the Times' Nate Chinen, "the album strongly suggests an artistic dialogue." Metheny and Zorn appeared on BBC Radio 6 Music for Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone in the UK, where the album earns four stars from the Daily Telegraph, the Scotsman, the Times, and the Independent, which concludes: "It's all dazzlingly virtuosic and evocative."
About this Album
“The Pat Metheny Trio’s playing conveys a sense of proportion, substance and coherence, along with rigorous clarity; solid benchmarks for any great improvisers at the peak of their game.” —New York Times
The Day Trip sessions were recorded at Manhattan’s Right Track studio in late October 2005, sequenced and released into a 10-song set in the winter of 2008. Reviews from the daily US press along the way have been a compendium of superlatives. The Philadelphia Inquirer declared, “Metheny shows why the trio is still relevant ... There’s nowhere to hide, and the easy fluency of Metheny’s chops create a unique world. His energy and verve make it fun to follow where he goes.” The Boston Herald concurred: “The trio format brings out the best in guitar virtuoso Pat Metheny, going all the way back to his stir-causing 1975 debut with drummer Bob Moses and late bass legend Jaco Pastorius ... But his current ensemble ... is arguably his best yet.” And the Louisville Courier Journal summed up the nightly reaction to the trio’s sets, “It was a collaborative tour de force that earned a standing ovation.”
Tokyo Day Trip: Live was originally released in May 2008 as a 5-track EP recorded live in Tokyo with the Day Trip trio prior to their studio sessions. This three-disc vinyl release combines the contents of the full-length album and the live EP in a three-pocket deluxe package with all the music on two CDs as well.
