Laurie Anderson in 2008 Disko Bay Expedition
Laurie Anderson is participating in Cape Farewell's 2008 Disko Bay Expedition, in which 40 artists, musicians and scientists travel to Greenland's Disko Bay area. Anderson joins fellow musicians Ryuichi Sakamoto, Feist, Martha Wainwright, and Robyn Hitchcock, as well as writers, architects, photographers, and oceanographers, in the project, which aims to draw attention to climate change. The expedition will visit Greenland's largest and fastest-moving glacier.
About this Album
For much of 2008, Laurie Anderson has been touring the world with her latest performance piece, Homeland. After its US premiere in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, the Boston Globe wrote that "musically, Homeland is perhaps Anderson's most sophisticated and intriguing work." "Mambo and Bling," now available in the Nonesuch Store as a special, limited-edition 7" vinyl single, is the first recorded music from the project to be released. The disc comes in a plain white sleeve with a thumbnail of the instantly recognizable silhouette above printed on the label. An album of music from Homeland is due to be released by Nonesuch Records in 2009.
The single's B-side, "Behind the Screen," comes from the short film Hidden Inside Mountains, written and directed by Laurie Anderson. The film debuted in Japan at EXPO 2005 and was an official selection at the Locarno, Toronto, Edinburgh, Telluride, Montreal, Prague, and Tribeca film festivals. It is a film of short stories about nature, artifice, and dreams; its haunting music features violins, bells, dog barks, and melody as well as Anderson's signature electronic sounds.
