    Songlines magazine has posted its list of the Top 25 Mali Albums, originally from the July 2013 issue of the magazine, and included are several artists and albums familiar to readers of the Nonesuch Journal: Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabaté, Amadou & Mariam, Rokia Traoré, Oumou Sangare, and Fatoumata Diawara. "Mali remains a wellspring of great music and culture," says Songlines. "After much deliberation, we are proud to present the top 25 albums to come from Mali, reminding us that there is an endless amount to celebrate in its music."

    Two classics albums from World Circuit Records are now available on vinyl: the 2001 reissue of Orchestra Baobab's much sought-after 1982 debut, Pirates Choice, and Ali Farka Touré's Grammy Award-winning 1993 collaboration with Ry Cooder, Talking Timbuktu. Each is available on double 180-gram vinyl LPs from World Circuit, distributed in North America on Nonesuch Records, and can be found at your favorite local record shop and in the vinyl section of the Nonesuch Store.

Together, these artists' 2010 releases garnered a total of six awards.

    Ali and Toumani, the second and last album pairing kora master Toumani Diabaté with the late guitar virtuoso Ali Farka Touré, has made the Metacritic list of the best-reviewed, highest-scoring albums of 2010, coming in at No. 5. "On Metacritic, we consider 'great' albums—those we label as having 'universal acclaim' from critics—to be those with a Metascore of 81 or greater," says the site. Ali and Toumani received an 89.

    Ali and Toumani, featuring kora master Toumani Diabaté and the late guitar virtuoso Ali Farka Touré, was released at the start of the year to great critical acclaim, with Pitchfork describing it as "uncommonly beautiful" and NPR calling it "breathtaking." At the year's end, the accolades continue, with the album making year's-best lists and being nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album.     The nominations are in for the fRoots Critics Poll of Best New Album of 2010, and among them are the Carolina Chocolate Drops and several artists on the World Circuit/Nonesuch roster: AfroCubism, Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté, and Cheikh Lô. This year marks the 25th annual fRoots Critics Poll. The winners will be announced in BBC Radio 3's World on 3 on December 3.

    Metacritic.com has released its mid-year report of "The Best Music of 2010 So Far"—and three Nonesuch releases have made the cut: Ali Farka Touré's collaboration with kora player Toumani Diabaté came in at #2, and Laurie Anderson's first studio album since 2001, Homeland, followed it at #3. The Black Keys recent album, Brothers, followed up at #27. John Schaefer of WNYC's Soundcheck picks Anderson's Homeland, Ali and Toumani, and Timothy Andres' Shy and Mighty as his best of the year so far.

    Ali and Toumani, the second and final collaboration between the late Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré and kora master Toumani Diabaté, was released earlier this year to critical acclaim and has now made its way to the top of the World Music Charts in Europe. The Mail & Guardian calls it "a masterpiece." The New Zealand Herald gives it five stars, calling it "stunning" as does Jambase. Sonic Boomers finds it to be "an achievement of brilliance."

Vanity Fair's verdict is "Buy It," saying the pairing "makes for intoxicating and seductive tracks that we all should consider a privilege to add to our record collections." PopMatters gives it a 9 out of 10, calling it "a complete triumph ... profound and powerful." Metro rates the album a perfect five stars, calling it "effortlessly soulful."

The Los Angeles Times calls it "an early contender for the warmest, most life-affirming listen of 2010." The Globe and Mail gives it four stars, hearing a "musical state of grace." The Philadelphia Daily News gives the album an A, calling it "a thing of gossamer beauty ... haunting, genteel, intricate and magical." The Lexington Herald-Leader says it showcases "the hushed, rootsy spiritualism of two pioneers who fashioned the majestic music of West Africa for the world."
