Joshua Redman's latest Nonesuch release, Compass, is out now. The recording features both trio and double trio formats, creating tracks that are "harmonically rich, rhythmically vibrant and bristling with creative complexity," says All About Jazz. "Redman's newly discovered easy-going effortlessness makes this the crowning achievement of his career."

As was mentioned earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, Joshua Redman will join label mate Brad Mehldau at London's Wigmore Hall for a duo concert next week. The saxophonist will then join Trio members Matt Penman and Greg Hutchinson for a three dates in Europe, followed by a return to the States for a five-night residency at New York's Jazz Standard at the end of the month.

The Trio format has lately become one for which Redman has made a name for himself, taking off from the acclaimed 2007 trio session Back East. Hutchinson was one of two drummers to join Redman on his most recent Nonesuch release, Compass: the album featured not one but two trios plus a double trio ensemble—also including drummer Brian Blade and bassists Reuben Rogers and Larry Grenadier.

Among all of the stellar participants on Compass, Redman remains "the unquestionable lead voice," says All About Jazz. Reviewer Jeff Stockton commends the unique format Redman chose for "encouraging and allowing him to give himself over to his improvisational instincts rather than his impeccably disciplined technique." When the two trios come together, says Stockton, they create tracks that are "harmonically rich, rhythmically vibrant and bristling with creative complexity."

Stockton's colleague at All About Jazz, Elena Gillespie, in a Trio concert review recently described Compass as "another exquisite journey" from Redman. It's a sentiment with which Stockton would undoubtedly concur, as he concludes in his album review: "Redman's newly discovered easy-going effortlessness makes this the crowning achievement of his career."
