    Punch Brothers' New Album Shows "Why They Are So Special," Says the Guardian; "This Is a Remarkable Band" (Four Stars)

    Punch Brothers' new album, Who's Feeling Young Now?, is out in just a matter of days, and in the UK, the Guardian, the Sun, Scotland's Daily Express, and Maverick all give it four stars. The album shows "why they are so special," says the Guardian. "This is a remarkable band." The Sun calls it "Nicely off-kilter yet bang on the money." Hear Punch Brothers' Celtic Connections set on World on 3 tonight on BBC Radio 3. Back in the States, the Aspen Times says: "Punch Brothers are exhibiting the sort of freedom that Radiohead brings to the music—a willingness to rethink structure, melody and tradition. They don't break down boundaries, but play as if there were no boundaries to contend with, like music was a clean canvas."

    Dr. John Launches Tour of Japan and Hong Kong

    Dr. John, whose new album, Locked Down, is due out April 3, launches a week-long tour of East Asia with two sets at Billboard Live in Osaka, Japan. It's the first of two consecutive nights for Dr. John and his band The Lower 911 at the venue, which will be followed by a three-night, six-set run at Billboard Live in Tokyo and two nights at the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Dr. John will lead a three-weekend residency at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York starting March 29, including three shows with The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, who produced the new album.

    The Black Keys Nominated for mtvU Woodie of the Year, Launch Three-Night, Sold-Out London Run

    Congratulations to The Black Keys, who have been nominated for two mtvU Woodie Awards: Woodie of the Year (Artist of the Year) and Performing Woodie (Best Live Act). Voting has begun and runs through March 9. The Black Keys begin their three-night, sold-out run at Alexandra Palace in London tonight. The Times gives Monday's Manchester show four stars, suggesting that The Black Keys are "the new, pre-eminent pop stars of the blues." The Daily Telegraph gives four stars as well to the "triumphant" show.

    Watch: Punch Brothers Perform "Movement and Location" for the Guardian

    Punch Brothers performed "Movement and Location," the opening track to their new album, Who's Feeling Young Now?, live for the Guardian’s “How I wrote …” video series. Before the band plays the tune, Chris Thile gives some background to the song's title and lyrics. Watch the video here. The band's recent Celtic Connections set can be heard via BBC Radio 2. "Punch Brothers are not a bluegrass band," says Guitar World. "[T]he group takes influences ranging from Radiohead to Bach to Earl Scruggs and combines them into a strikingly unique brand of acoustic music."

    Watch: The Black Keys' "Gold on the Ceiling" Video

    The Black Keys' new music video for "Gold on the Ceiling," off their album El Camino, premiered Monday on MTV. The video was directed by Reid Long and captures the band both on stage and behind the scenes, at their album release show at New York's Webster Hall and on the road. SPIN calls the song "a punchy, swag-friendly rave-up." VH1 calls it "an honest, organic rock song that is as faithful to the roots of the genre as any modern band can be." MTV sums up the video succinctly: "It simply features The Black Keys doing what they do best: rocking the f*** out." Watch it here.

    Kronos Quartet's New Album Features "Exquisitely Recorded, Radiant" Performance of Martynov "Masterpiece" (LA Times)

    Kronos Quartet's new album features the work of contemporary Russian composer Vladimir Martynov. The Los Angeles Times calls his Schubert-Quintet (Unfinished) a "masterpiece. The performance, exquisitely recorded, is radiant." The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette calls it a "hauntingly beautiful work, a masterwork ... This is an album brimming with warmth and emotion, of flesh and spirit, that is romantic and beautifully played." The album comes "highly recommended" from All Music, which says: "Nonesuch's sound is clean, warmly immediate, and vibrant." The Winnipeg Free Press says "the Kronos crew deliver a stunning exploration that sends chills."

    Adam Guettel's "Myths and Hymns" Given "Gently Luminous Staging" (NY Times) at NYC's West End Theatre

    Myths and Hymns, Adam Guettel's song cycle on the subject of faith and longing in a secular world, has opened in a new production at New York's West End Theatre featuring a new narrative and direction by Elizabeth Lucas. It's a "gently luminous staging," says the New York Times; "the universal expressions of hope, fear, yearning and desire in the songs will strike deeply sounding chords." Nonesuch released a recording of the songs of Myths and Hymns in 1997 with vocals from the likes of Audra McDonald, Mandy Patinkin, Kristin Chenoweth, and the composer himself.

    Watch: Punch Brothers Perform in "Vanity Fair" Video; Launch NYC Concert Ticket Giveaway

    Punch Brothers' new album, Who's Feeling Young Now?, is out just one week from today. Anyone who's pre-ordered or does so this week is entered to win tickets to an intimate, invite-only show at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City on February 20. The band will perform on The Tonight Show next Wednesday and can be seen performing the album's opening track in a new video from Vanity Fair by photographer Danny Clinch. Watch it here.

    k.d. lang Nominated for Juno Award for Producer of the Year

    Congratulations to k.d. lang, who has been nominated for a JUNO Award for Producer of the Year. lang was recognized for co-producing, with Joe Pisapia, her latest album, Sing it Loud. Another Canadian icon, William Shatner, will host the 2012 JUNO Awards broadcast, airing live on CTV the evening of Sunday, April 1, from Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. Tickets go on sale this Friday. lang and her band the Siss Boom Bang launch their spring/summer tour May 8 in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

    The Black Keys' UK Tour Launch "Another Fine Victory for Pop's Unlikely Lads," Says the Guardian (Four Stars)

    The Black Keys launched the UK leg of their European tour with sold-out shows in Nottingham Friday and Edinburgh on Saturday. Up next are more sold-out shows in Manchester, followed by a three-night run in London. The Keys got the "crowd rocking madly, a tight mass of bodies punching the air" at Friday's show, notes the Independent in a perfect five-star review. The band has "turned an old-fashioned sound into something timeless," says the Guardian in a four-star review. "As Nottingham roars its approval, it's another fine victory for pop's unlikely lads." STV calls Saturday's show "spectacular."
