Ben Folds and Nick Hornby will co-headline "Liner Notes," an event at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe in New York City on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, to explore the cross-pollination of music and literature while raising funds for Housing Works, a New York-based HIV/AIDS service organization. Presented by SPIN and moderated by the magazine’s deputy editor, Steve Kandell, the event will also celebrate the release of Hornby and Folds's collaborative album, Lonely Avenue, due out tomorrow on Nonesuch. Selected videos from the event will be posted on SPIN.com following the event.

SIRIUS XM Book Radio (SIRIUS channel 117/XM channel 163), the 24/7 channel devoted to books and authors, will broadcast the evening as a special “SIRIUS XM Book Radio Presents: Liner Notes—Music and Words from Ben Folds and Nick Hornby" on November 5 at 7 PM EST and again November 7 at 7 PM EST. The Spectrum (SIRIUS channel 18/XM channel 45), SIRIUS XM’s commercial-free music channel that plays rock from the past, present, and future, will air the Folds-Hornby performance on November 18 at 9 PM EST.

The “Liner Notes” series sprung from SPIN.com's Book Club series, where an eclectic collection of literary-minded musicians recommended and discussed books that have influenced their songwriting and musical careers. The Book Club, created and spearheaded by writer and music journalist Emily Zemler, highlighted the influence of literature on music, promote literacy, foster a love of reading among music fans, and raise money for nonprofit organizations. This is the fourth Liner Notes event, a series established and organized by Zemler with the help of SPIN and Housing Works.

The premiere event, headlined by musician Tegan Quin (Tegan and Sara) and author Augusten Burroughs, was held on September 4, 2008. A pairing of musician Amanda Palmer and author Neil Gaiman followed on June 3, 2009, and a collaboration between author Salman Rushdie and Bay Area rockers Dredg was held October 1, 2009. Combined, the three events have raised over $25,000 for Housing Works.

Housing Works Bookstore Cafe is a nonprofit bookstore, café, and event venue stocked entirely by donations and run largely by volunteers. All proceeds benefit Housing Works, the nation's largest community-based AIDS service organization. Since 1990, more than 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS have received lifesaving services including housing, medical and mental health care, meals, job training, drug treatment, HIV prevention education, and social support.
