Brad Mehldau launches a ten-day, seven-city European tour with fellow pianist and longtime friend Kevin Hays at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, tonight. Mehldau and Hays, whose collaborative album with composer/arranger Patrick Zimmerli, Modern Music, was released on Nonesuch in September 2011, then head to the Continent for performances in Vienna, Zagreb, and Zurich; return to the UK for a show at Birmingham Town Hall; and close out the tour in Paris and Porto, Portugal.

The album Modern Music features pieces written by each of the three musicians, Mehldau, Hays, and Zimmerli, as well as works by Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, and Philip Glass, performed by the two pianists in arrangements by Zimmerli. The Guardian calls it a "fascinating session" that's "full of surprises." The New York Times says the pianists bring "a high sheen to some choice material." Click here to hear clips from the album and to order a copy today.

Mehldau continues on the European road in March for a month-long tour of Mehliana, his duo project with drummer Mark Guiliana, then returns to the United States for a run of duo dates with fellow Nonesuch artist Chris Thile.
