Brad Mehldau joins the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for the US premiere of his Variations on a Melancholy Theme, which he says sounds “as if Brahms woke up one day and had the blues." Also on the program are works by Brahms and Beethoven. The three-city tour includes stops in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, and the New York premiere at Carnegie Hall. Mehldau then kicks off a ten-day US tour of Mehliana, a new electric duo with drummer Mark Guiliana, and heads to Europe for a week of solo shows before a two-week Mehliana tour of Europe and the UK.

Pianist and composer Brad Mehldau joins the New York-based Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for three nights of performances featuring the US premiere of his Variations on a Melancholy Theme, which he says sounds “as if Brahms woke up one day and had the blues.” Indeed, the concert program also includes Brahms's Liebeslieder-Walzer, Op. 52, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, "Eroica." The brief tour begins at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Friday, followed by a performance at the Williams Center for the Arts at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, next Tuesday, and, finally, the New York premiere in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium on Wednesday, October 9, marking the start of Orpheus's 41st season. Mehldau and the orchestra gave the world premiere of his Variations on a Melancholy Theme as part of a European tour together in November 2012.

Following these concerts with Orpheus, Brad Mehldau kicks off a ten-day US tour in a new electric duo with drummer Mark Guiliana called Mehliana. The tour begins with two sets at The Triple Door in Seattle on October 16 and includes shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles, as well as stops in Illinois, Ohio, and Massachusetts. Mehldau then heads to Europe for a week of solo shows before he and Guiliana reunite for a two-week Mehliana tour of Europe and the UK. See below for all of Mehldau's currently scheduled tour dates. In 2012, Brad Mehldau released two albums on Nonesuch Records with his Trio, featuring Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums: Ode, a recording of 11 previously unreleased songs composed by Mehldau, and Where Do You Start, comprising the Trio’s interpretations of ten tunes by other composers, along with one Mehldau original. In May 2013, Nonesuch released Joshua Redman's new album, Walking Shadows, which Brad Mehldau produced and on which he performed.
