    Caetano Veloso Celebrated As 2012 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year

    Congratulations to Caetano Veloso, an eight-time Latin Grammy winner and two-time Grammy winner, who was celebrated as the 2012 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year last night in Las Vegas. Songs from Veloso's catalog were performed by an array of artists and friends of the honoree, including Alejandro Sanz, Juanes, Juan Luis Guerra, Nelly Furtado, and Enrique Bunbury. A portion of the proceeds from the gala will benefit Veloso's chosen charity, Fundación Viva Cazuza in Brazil, as well as The Latin Recording Academy's outreach and education programs. The celebration preceded the XIII Annual Latin Grammy Awards, which will be broadcast live on the Univision Network tonight at 8 PM ET.

The celebration will precede the XIII Annual Latin Grammy Awards, which will take place on November 15.

    In 2004, Caetano Veloso curated a week of special concerts at Carnegie Hall and invited his longtime friend and collaborator David Byrne to join him for the show captured on the new album Caetano Veloso & David Byrne: Live at Carnegie Hall. "Respected songwriters who for the last four decades have in similar ways chronicled their respective cultures, the pair trade stripped-down renditions of some of their classics on this live document and in doing so offer borderless bliss," says the Los Angeles Times. Citing Veloso's take on Byrne's "(Nothing but) Flowers," the Times concludes: "Such joy is evident throughout Live at Carnegie Hall.” MOJO gives the album four stars.

    In 2004, Caetano Veloso curated a week of special concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall and invited his longtime friend and collaborator David Byrne to join him for the show heard on the new album Caetano Veloso and David Byrne: Live at Carnegie Hall, out now. The album earns four stars from Glide, the Guardian, and the Observer, which calls it "an entrancing showcase of their respective talents ... and even on disc a sense of joy and spontaneity is palpable." The Herald Scotland says the album "leaves the listener grinning from ear to ear." The New York Daily News includes it among the best new albums. The Seattle Times calls the concert "an absolute jewel."

    In the spring of 2004, Caetano Veloso curated a week of special concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall as one of its prestigious Perspectives artists. He invited his longtime friend and collaborator David Byrne to join him for an evening. The concert was recorded for broadcast on NPR and now will be released by Nonesuch as Caetano Veloso and David Byrne: Live at Carnegie Hall on March 13. The singer/guitarists each performed an acoustic set of their own songs and also performed together. Caetano Veloso and David Byrne: Live at Carnegie Hall is available now for pre-order in the Nonesuch Store.

    Caetano Veloso As Guest Director, 2011 Telluride Film Festival Gets Under Way

    The 38th Telluride Film Festival gets under way today, with Caetano Veloso as its Guest Director. Tom Luddy, Co-Founder of the Festival, says: "Caetano Veloso will be presenting six films, both rare and established classics, with his unique enthusiasm about why they are movies worth seeing again or for the first time." In addition, the festival's program includes 25 new feature films plus special artist tributes, classics and restorations, shorts, student films, seminars and conversations, each introduced or proceeded with a Q&A by its filmmaker, actors, writer, or producer.

    It was 25 years ago this fall that Caetano Veloso's self-titled album was released in the US on Nonesuch Records. That acoustic guitar set launched a relationship that has since brought more than a dozen unforgettable albums, most recently last year's zii e zie, of which the Times of London declared: "The Brazilian master remains in a league of his own." Now, Veloso's Nonesuch catalog is available digitally, in the Nonesuch Store and on iTunes and Amazon. Veloso is Guest Director of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival, which will be held over Labor Day weekend.

    Caetano Veloso Named Guest Director of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival

    Caetano Veloso has been named the Guest Director of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival. Veloso has been invited to select a series of films to present at the festival, now in its 38th year, to be held over Labor Day weekend. Among the festival's past guest directors are Stephen Sondheim, Laurie Anderson, and Peter Sellars, who recommended Veloso as guest director. In keeping with Telluride Film Festival tradition, Veloso’s film selections, along with the rest of the Telluride lineup, will be kept secret until the festival's Opening Day, September 2.
