    Carolina Chocolate Drops performed a new take of their song "Country Girl" for MTV Hive's Stop/Watch, in which artists are challenged to complete a song in 60 seconds. On this take, the band's "country shuffle has a sharper twang and a steel-soul," says MTV, "with singer Rhiannon Giddens showing new dimensions of her voice as she roars through the first verse of the original." Watch it here. Carolina Chocolate Drops are in for two days of music-making at the Winnipeg Folk Festival this weekend.

    Carolina Chocolate Drops' tour brought the band to the Mystic Theater in Petaluma, California, this spring. While there, the band sat down backstage with PBS's Sound Tracks: Quick Hits to discuss their new album, Leaving Eden, the history of the band, and the music they champion. Band mates Dom Flemons and Rhiannon Giddens gave an exclusive backstage performance. Watch both videos plus two songs from the stage here. Says Quick Hits: "It's hard to imagine a quartet being more in sync than the Drops are during this virtuoso, rowdy romp."

    Carolina Chocolate Drops recently stopped by USA Today's StudioA to perform a three-song set featuring music from their new album, Leaving Eden, and their Grammy-winning Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig. The set opens with "Your Baby Ain't Sweet Like Mine," off the earlier album, followed by "Country Girl" and "Riro's House," both from the new album.     Congratulations to Carolina Chocolate Drops and Punch Brothers, who have both been nominated for Duo/Group of the Year in the 2012 Americana Honors & Awards, presented by the Americana Music Association. Punch Brothers' own Chris Thile has also been nominated as Instrumentalist of the Year. The awards ceremony will take place at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium on September 12, as part of the Americana Music Festival.

    Carolina Chocolate Drops’ video for the track “Country Girl,” after rating as one of the most-watched music videos on CMT.com following its premiere last week, will air throughout this week on CMT’s High 5 Countdown. The show airs on CMT at 11 AM ET/PT Monday through Friday, and the video can still be viewed online. “Country Girl” appears on the Grammy-winning band’s new album, Leaving Eden.

    Carolina Chocolate Drops' video for the track "Country Girl" has premiered on CMT.com. The song is from the band’s new album, Leaving Eden. Watch the video here. The Chocolate Drops are continuing their North American tour throughout the summer including a run of shows with the Dave Matthews Band. Following tonight's performance in Michigan, the tour takes the band to Virginia for three shows, starting with a concert at the Birchmere in Alexandria. The Chicago Tribune calls their recent performance "an ecstatic celebration of old-time music," in which the band "proved that the future—and the past—of American roots music is in very good hands."

    Carolina Chocolate Drops, who joined The Chieftains for a performance on Later ... with Jools Holland on BBC Two last Tuesday, were also featured on  Friday's full episode of Later. That show included an encore broadcast of The Chieftains performance as well as a solo performance from the Chocolate Drops of the song "No Man's Mama," off of their new album, Leaving Eden. Watch the performance here. Following the weekend's "joyous, emotionally committed show" (Times-Picayune) at New Orleans Jazz Fest, the band performs in the Midwest this week.

    The 2012 New Orleans Jazz Fest got under way last weekend. Carolina Chocolate Drops gave "a joyous, emotionally committed show," reports the Times-Picayune, which calls Cheikh Lô's set "as colorful and unique as his signature patchwork tunic," and notes that Dr. John sounded "newly invigorated" as on his new album, Locked Down. He also joined Bruce Springsteen on stage to help close the first weekend in style. This coming weekend sees Dr. John's return and a set from another favorite son of New Orleans, Allen Toussaint.

    This year's Newport Folk Festival in July includes sets from Punch Brothers and Sara Watkins. A new short documentary from sö pa productions and Ryan Mastro revisits last year's festival and looks into what makes Newport so special. The video features interviews and performances from artists at last year's festival, including Carolina Chocolate Drops, The Low Anthem, Chris Thile, Michael Daves, Wanda Jackson, and Emmylou Harris. "In the story of my life, folk music brought me to music," says Harris. Newport "was where these people that I just kind of worshiped gathered." Watch the documentary here.

    The 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, better known as Jazz Fest, gets under way today and runs through this weekend and the next at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. Among the performers set to take the various stage at the festival this year are four artists familiar to readers of the Nonesuch Journal: two New Orleans legends and hometown heroes, Dr. John and Allen Toussaint, plus two artists whose unique musical styles will make them feel right at home at Jazz Fest, Carolina Chocolate Drops and Cheikh Lô.

    Carolina Chocolate Drops joined The Chieftains for a performance on Later ... with Jools Holland on BBC Two last night, marking the legendary Irish band's 50th anniversary and the UK release of its new album, Voice of Ages, on which Carolina Chocolate Drops perform "Pretty Little Girl" with The Chieftains. The two bands performed the song together live on the Later. Watch it here. Then tune in to Later on Friday for a song from the Chocolate Drops' new album, Leaving Eden. The band resumes its US tour in New Orleans this weekend.
