Carnegie Hall has announced, with its 2018–19 concert season, that Chris Thile will hold the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer's Chair for the season. His residency includes a concert of Live From Here Songs of the Week; intimate Weill Recital Hall performances of a new piece and works by Bach; a multi-artist evening of traditional Scots, Irish, and American folk music; and the first-ever double bill of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers. You can watch a video previewing the events below. Among the previous holders of the Debs Composer's Chair are Steve Reich, John Adams, Brad Mehldau, Louis Andriessen, Elliott Carter, and Philip Glass.

The concerts begin with a performance in Zankel Hall on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, titled The Song of the Week Show, in which Thile will be joined by Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan to perform Songs of the Week from his public radio show Live From Here. Thile's new album, Thanks for Listening, released late last year, also comprises Songs of the Week from the show and features guest vocals from Jarosz and O'Donovan.

The following month, brings the music to the intimate Weill Recital Hall for two solo performances on Wednesday, November 28, at 6:30pm and 9:30pm. The program includes an original piece commissioned for the occasion by Carnegie Hall, as well as works by Bach and others. Thile released a solo album of Bach sonatas and partitas in 2013.

Thile will be joined a number of friends to open Carnegie Hall's festival Migrations: The Making of America in Stern Auditorium on Saturday, March 9, 2019. It will be an evening of traditional Scots, Irish, and American folk music—including old-time and bluegrass—that explores the evolution of these traditions and their continued impact on one another.

The final concert in Thile's series as the Debs Composer's Chair will be well worth the wait: for the first time, his two bands Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers will appear on the same bill, performing in Stern Auditorium on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.
