Conor Oberst, who released his new solo album, Ruminations, on Nonesuch last month, talks with The National's Matt Berninger for The Talkhouse Music Podcast. The two discuss their own songwriting and other songwriters, not least the late, great Leonard Cohen. They "are two of rock’s heaviest-hitting lyricists," writes Talkhouse producer Elia EInhorn. "Turns out, they’re also huge fans of each other’s songs." You can hear the conversation here.

The performance, co-presented by NPR Music's Bob Boilen and WFUV Radio's Rita Houston, was webcast live via NPR Music's Facebook page. You can now watch the full album set here via NPR Music. "Ruminations is one of Conor Oberst's most personal records," says Boilen, "a collection of brave, dark songs ... that are unmistakably moving and contain some of Oberst's best lyrics and imagery."

NPR Music will soon post the full concert, but these three tracks "establish the sound of the record, spare and lyric-based. These are the sounds of hard moments, elevated through beautiful music and a true poetic touch." Boilen includes "A Little Uncanny" on the latest episode of All Songs Considered. Ruminations is BBC Radio 6 Music's Album of the Day today.

Conor Oberst's new album, Ruminations, is due out in two weeks, on Friday, October 14. But you don't need to wait till then to hear it: the album is streaming in full here as an NPR First Listen. "Oberst's distinctive warble is set against a spare patchwork of acoustic guitar, piano and the occasional harmonica, drawing most of the attention squarely to his words," writes NPR's Stephen Thompson. His "songwriting remains on point ... [T]hese are some of Oberst's darkest and most personal songs ... That unsparing quality helps Ruminations stand out, no matter how simple its adornment."

This past winter, Conor Oberst found himself hibernating in his hometown of Omaha after living in New York City for more than a decade. He emerged with the unexpectedly raw, unadorned solo album Ruminations, available October 14, 2016, on Nonesuch. He went to ARC, the studio he built with his Bright Eyes bandmate and friend Mike Mogis, and, with the help of engineer Ben Brodin, recorded all the songs within 48 hours. The results are almost sketch-like in their sparseness: Oberst alone with his guitar, piano, and harmonica. Oberst will perform songs from the album at special solo shows this fall at venues including Carnegie Hall and the Ryman Auditorium.
