David Byrne will perform a very special free concert at Brooklyn, New York's Prospect Bark Bandhsell tonight as part of the Opening Night events of the 31st Annual Celebrate Brooklyn! concert series. Byrne will offer music from his ongoing Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno tour, featuring material from his collaborations with Eno, including 1981’s groundbreaking My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, reissued by Nonesuch on CD in 2006 and on vinyl in 2009. Tonight's concert begins at 8 PM with gates open at 6:30 PM.

"One of the city's coolest summer concert series," says the Village Voice's Mikael Wood, "opens its 2009 season with a free show by one of the city's coolest art-rock deities, David Byrne."

The Opening Night events will also include a pre-concert benefit dinner, Celebrate Brooklyn’s inaugural Green Gala, and a post-concert dance party open to gala guests and Friends of Celebrate Brooklyn. The Green Gala is an eco-friendly benefit to support the festival's programs and its efforts to present more environmentally responsible events. One of the new measures being launched to reduce the festival’s environmental impact is a major bike-parking program, an issue close to Byrne's heart. (Byrne recently reviewed Jeff Mapes new book Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists Are Changing American Cities for the New York Times.) In partnership with cycling advocacy organizations Transportation Alternatives, Livable Streets, and Ride the City, the Celebrate Brooklyn! Bike Zone will offer, at every performance, the first-ever large-scale bike parking area at a cultural event in New York.

David Byrne has just added another leg of the tour in Europe this summer, starting at the Badminton Theatre in Athens, Greece, on July 6, and running through August 9, with a set at the Big Chill Festival in Ledbury, England. For tour information, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
