Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil closed out their US tour with two sold-out nights at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, celebrating the release of what the New York Times calls their "gemlike" new live double album Dois Amigos, Um Século de Música: Multishow Live. While on tour, they spoke with NPR's alt.latino about the new album, their friendship, and their legendary careers. They also spoke with Rolling Stone, which says: "The two continue to record exquisite, playful, even noisy music belying their septuagenarian status." And Veloso is the guest on this week's New York Times Popcast.

Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil kicked off a US tour featuring music from their new album, Dois Amigos, Um Século de Música: Multishow Live, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday. "What a pleasure it is to watch two masters at work," exclaims the Los Angeles Times music critic Mikael Wood of the "deeply satisfying concert." The two artists used "gorgeous melodies and propulsive rhythms to put across profound ideas," performing songs from their "superb" new album. As the Times headline reads, they "basically played their album in concert (and it was awesome)." The tour continues in Oakland, Miami, and Brooklyn.

Gilberto Gil will resign as Brazil's minister of culture next year to seek treatment for a polyp on his vocal cords. The polyp first caused the legendary performer trouble at a concert performance last year. When Gil took on the official political office in 2003, it was an unexpected turn of events for the longtime activist; he was jailed in 1968 along with Caetano Veloso for what the military dictatorship then in power took to be the subversive nature of the Tropicália movement the musicians had founded.
