The Los Angeles Philharmonic has announced its 2010-2011 concert season. As part of its all-online announcement, the Philharmonic published video statements from Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and Deborah Borda, as well as from John Adams, as the orchestra's creative chair. Borda says that during the forthcoming season, Dudamel's second as music director, the institution is looking "to open new boundaries through a series of defining partnerships with John Adams, Thomas Adès, Herbie Hancock, and Wynton Marsalis, which allow us to expand upon who we are and who we can be."

As part of Adams's partnership with the Philharmonic, the composer will oversee its famed Green Umbrella new-music series, now celebrating three decades of showcasing contemporary music. Included among the five concerts is a performance from Michael Gordon's Weather; a night of music by George Crumb, including his Ancient Voices of Children; and a final concert in which Adams will lead the LA Phil's New Music Group in a program of new works by Gabriel Kahane, Andrew Norman, and Missy Mazzoli.

Adams's Slonimsky's Earbox will also be featured in the orchestra's touring program, paired with Beethoven's first and seventh symphonies, as Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic make their way across Europe for a three-week tour next January.

Brad Mehldau will also perform at Walt Disney Hall as part of the Philharmonic's 2010-2011 season. On January 21, 2011, Mehldau will be joined by a chamber orchestra, label mate Joshua Redman on saxophone, Larry Grenadier on bass, and Jeff Ballard and Matt Chamberlain on percussion in performing Highway Rider. The album Highway Rider, with performances by those featured players, is due out March 16 on Nonesuch and is available for pre-order now in the Nonesuch Store with an exclusive bonus demo, in which Mehldau explains to producer Jon Brion how he sees the title track unfolding.
