    Kronos Quartet and Kronos Performing Arts Association (KPAA) will present its fifth-annual, three-day hometown music festival, Kronos Festival 2019, at the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco, May 30–June 1. This year, the festival highlights the voices of singers, storytellers, and activists over three evening concerts—including one with Nonesuch label mate Sam Amidon—a Saturday morning family concert, and Kronos Labs, free public events that are new this year.

    A Thousand Thoughts, a live documentary with the Kronos Quartet, written and directed by filmmakers Sam Green and Joe Bini—which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and has been performed around the world—will continue to tour the US in the coming weeks and months: in Urbana, Nashville, Austin, Detroit, and New York City. The multimedia performance piece blends live music and narration with archival footage and filmed interviews to tell Kronos's story. "It's as magical an amalgamation as you can imagine," exclaims the Los Angeles Times.

Punch Brothers' new album, All Ashore, won the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, the band's first Grammy Award. Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet's collaboration Landfall won the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music / Small Ensemble Performance, Anderson's first Grammy Award.

    Congratulations to Kronos Quartet on receiving the 2018 WOMEX Artist Award. "To become a pioneer in one musical stream requires immense dedication, determination and, of course, prodigious skill and creativity," Jim Hickson writes of "the most important string quartet of their generation" in his introductory note for the WOMEX 2018 delegate guide. "To become such a leader in more than one stream must truly signal that there is some intense genius at work—genius that the Kronos Quartet possess in abundance."

    In honor of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch puppeteer Caroll Spinney's retirement from Sesame Street after nearly 50 years, we revisit Kronos Quartet's trip to that beloved street in 1987 to talk with Big Bird about the string quartet and making music. "His open and kind-hearted view of the world and how we should treat each other is something we should forever aspire to," Kronos says of Spinney, and we concur.
