Jeremy Denk performs a sold-out solo recital at the American Philosophical Society’s Benjamin Franklin Hall in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon. On the program is Schumann’s Carnaval, Op. 9, selections from Ligeti’s Études Book II—which he recorded on his 2012 Nonesuch debut album, Ligeti/Beethoven—and two Mozart sonatas: Sonata in F-major, K. 533/494, and Sonata in A-minor, K. 310.

The Observer, reviewing Denk's "dazzling" Nonesuch debut album, described his performance of the Ligeti as "crisp, nuanced and technically flawless." NPR said: "Denk plays masterfully, opening up each puzzle box in turn with vitality, wit and absolute assurance." The Arts Fuse called it "revelatory."

A new production of John Adams's opera Doctor Atomic will be given its world premiere at the Badisches Staats Theater in Karlsruhe, Germany, on Saturday evening. The production, starring Armin Kolarczyk as Robert Oppenheimer and Katherine Tier as his wife Kitty, is directed by Yuval Sharon and conducted by Johannes Willig. Performances continue throughout the season, till May 25.

---

Timo Andres's new piece Austerity Measures, which he describes as a "string quartet for percussion," receives its world premiere in a performance by Third Coast Percussion at the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center in Notre Dame, Indiana, on Sunday afternoon. Also on the program is Steve Reich's 1995 piece Proverb, performed by Third Coast as well as Notre Dame faculty member Carmen-Helena Téllez and vocalists from the Sacred Music Program.

---

Shawn Colvin rounds out the latest leg of her US solo tour with two shows in Florida this weekend: at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall tonight and Capitol Theatre in Clearwater on Saturday. She launches a tour of the UK next weekend as part of the Celtic Connections: Transatlantic Sessions. As announced earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, Colvin and fellow singer-songwriter will tour the US together in March.

---

Pianist Richard Goode performs a solo piano recital at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’s Virginia G. Piper Theater in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Sunday. On the program are works by Schubert and Chopin, and the first dozen of Debussy’s Préludes (Book 1).

---

As noted earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, the new Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis, already playing in theaters across the US, opens throughout the UK today, earning five-star reviews from the Times of London, Telegraph, Guardian, and Time Out. "From the moment Llewyn Davis sings the folk ballad 'Hang Me, Oh Hang Me' in a spotlit halo of smoke in the Gaslight Café in downtown New York in 1961, you know you are going to love this movie," exclaims the Times. "Llewyn finds succour in the music and so do we, because it’s glorious." Says the Telegraph: "The film is wildly accomplished; moving and rich and funny and exhilarating in a way that leaves you prickling from toes to scalp. It’s an instant fixture on the Coens’ A-list, which is no small compliment." To find out where Inside Llewyn Davis is playing in the UK, and for tickets, click here.

Iron and Wine's tour continues at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival (also with Case) next weekend, followed by a benefit for the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago; stops in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina; and a six-city tour of Florida. The music continues into the spring with a show in Hawaii and festival sets in Georgia and Delaware.

---

Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica continue their extensive residency at the Festival de Música de Canarias on the Canary Islands, off the coast of Spain, with two more sets this weekend—at Teatro Insular in Lanzarote on Saturday and Auditorio Alfredo Kraus in Gran Canaria on Sunday—plus a final set in Tenerife on Monday. Kremer and the chamber orchestra kick off a US tour at the 92nd Street Y in New York next Thursday.

---

Natalie Merchant joins the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra for two performances in Colorado: at The Lincoln Theater in Fort Collins on Saturday and the Pikes Peak Theater in Colorado Springs on Sunday.

---

Sara Watkins performs at the Marines’ Memorial Theatre in San Francisco on Sunday, as part of the 13th Annual SF Sketchfest. She and her brother Sean bring their Watkins Family Hour show to the comedy festival, where they are joined by special guests Tom Brousseau, Paul F. Tompkins, and Loudon Wainwright III.
