Emmylou Harris and Sara Watkins will be featured guests on the beloved public radio program A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor Saturday evening. The show will be broadcast live from a sold-out performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Also on the show are mandolinist Sam Bush, fiddler Stuart Duncan, and Tennessee duo The Civil Wars.

Jessica Lea Mayfield is in Nashville as well, to kick off her US tour, with Daniel Martin Moore supporting. First up is a show at Mercy Lounge in Nashville, the new hometown of Dan Auerbach, who produced her Nonesuch debut album, Tell Me. Mayfield and Moore head next to Atlanta for a show at The Earl on Saturday, and to Asheville, North Carolina, to play The Grey Eagle on Sunday.

The Tennessean says Mayfield's "staggering" new album "proves she’s not only one of the most unique young players on that field, but one of the best."
Mayfield tells Nashville Scene: "I kind of get overwhelmed by certain feelings and have to write about them, and if they end up being unique or not, [it's] out of my hands."

John Adams's music will be the focus of a concert by the North Carolina Symphony at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh tonight and Saturday night. Conductor Benjamin Wallfisch will lead the North Carolina Symphony, guest pianist Christopher Taylor and the North Carolina Master Chorale in a “Composer Portraits” tribute to Adams, with three pieces by Adams—Eros Piano, Short Ride in a Fast Machine, and Harmonium—preceded by music by three composers who inspired Adams: Beethvoen's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Britten's Young Apollo, and Ives's The Unanswered Question.

“Composer Portraits: John Adams” includes the premier performance of University of North Carolina School of the Arts student Leo Hurley’s String Quartet No. 1, the winning entry in the Symphony’s John Adams String Quartet Competition. The piece will be presented within a special chamber music performance by Symphony musicians in Meymandi Concert Hall prior to tonight's concert.

Timothy Andres joins singer Melissa Hughes for a performance at the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, New York, tonight. It's the second in a four-part series of concerts this year as a part of the Brooklyn Heights based Music at First series, which aims to make an eclectic mix of musicians accessible to a wider audience. On tonight's program are works by Matt Marks, Gabriel Kahane (the Craigslistlieder), Eric Shanfield, and more. The Independent, responding to a new piece Andres has posted to his website, andres.com, calls him "a fascinating and fast-developing musician."

Bill Frisell launched an 11-city European tour featuring the music of his last Nonesuch album, Disfarmer, last week. Joining him on tour are steel-guitar player Greg Leisz, bassist Viktor Krauss, and violinist Carrie Rodriquez. The tour continues this weekend with two performances in France, at Pôle Sud in Strasbourg, tonight, and the Espace Paul Éluard in Stains as part of the Festival Banlieues Bleues, Saturday, followed by a Sunday show at the Allerheiligen Hofkirche in Munich, Germany.

On the heels of Southern California’s Philip Glass Festival, the composer heads to the Chase Room at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on Saturday to host a conversation about his works and life.

Wanda Jackson's US tour with support from the Dex Romweber Duo continues this weekend with stops at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington, Indiana, tonight; Southgate House in Newport, Kentucky, on Saturday; and Blueberry Hill in St. Louis, Missouri, on Sunday. Jackson spoke with the Cincinnati Enquirer in advance of Saturday's show for an interview you can read at cincinnati.com. As noted earlier today in the Nonesuch Journal, the track "Like a Baby," off her new album, The Party Ain't Over, was named today's Song of the Day by NPR.

The Low Anthem continues its European tour with a performance at Übel & Gefährlich in Hamburg, Germany, and at Flex Kulturzentrum in Vienna, Austria, on Sunday. The Head and the Heart opens both nights.

Brad Mehldau performs a solo concert at the Filarmonica in Bilbao, Spain, tonight. Mehldau is then joined by mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter at the Casa da Musica in Porto, Portugal, on Saturday, for a performance of his expanded Love Songs, as well as works by Brahms, Fauré, Lennon & McCartney, Sibelius, and Strauss.

Mehldau's latest Nonesuch release, the 2CD/DVD Live in Marciac, will be featured on the BBC Radio 3 Sunday night with Claire Martin, who will review  and play a few tracks off the album.

Pat Metheny and his Trio, featuring drummer Antonio Sanchez and bassist Ben Williams, perform at the Teatro de la Ciudad de México in Sanchez's hometown of Mexico City on Saturday.

Randy Newman plays a concert at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York, tonight. He then heads north of the 49th parallel perform at Convocation Hall in Toronto, Ontario, on Saturday. The Toronto Sun calls him "one of the sharpest songwriters of his generation."

Also this weekend, public radio's Studio 360 re-airs a segment from 2008 in which Newman spoke with host Kurt Andersen about his album Harps and Angels, which had just been released. You can listen to the piece here:

    Kronos Quartet has announced its ninth-annual Kronos Festival, to take place at SFJAZZ Center, June 20–23, 2024. The festival marks the ensemble’s milestone 50th Anniversary year and the farewell performances of John Sherba and Hank Dutt, members of Kronos Quartet for more than 45 years. It will feature a slate of world and Bay Area premieres commissioned as part of the KRONOS Five Decades season; several guest artists; and the final performance of A Thousand Thoughts, a live documentary chronicling the quartet’s career, written and directed by Sam Green and Joe Bini.
