Composers Steve Reich and Stephen Sondheim take part in an evening of conversation, moderated by WNYC's John Schaefer, in The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on Saturday night, as part of Lincoln Center's American Songbook series. This marks the first the time the two will appear together on stage. The evening also includes performances of several of the composers' seminal works and Reich's latest piece, Radio Rewrite, featuring Paul Gemignani, George Lee Andrews, Kate Baldwin, Michael Cerveris, Ensemble Signal, Alexander Gemignani, and Derek Johnson.

"The protean, game-changing lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim has said that since he began listening to the legendary minimalist composer Steve Reich, many decades ago now, he has felt constantly energized, moved, and surprised by his near-contemporary," writes The New Yorker's Hilton Als, who spoke with Sondheim about his appreciation for his fellow composer.

"I have a blanket admiration for Reich, and I never heard a piece of his that bored me," Sondheim tells Als. "The people who dig him just look forward to listening. You never know what’s next." Read more at newyorker.com.

The Black Keys' latest performance on Austin City Limits (ACL) premieres Saturday on PBS stations across the US. The band's set includes songs from their latest album, Turn Blue, and more. This is the band's second appearance on ACL.

---

Pianist Jeremy Denk performs on two ends of the weather spectrum this weekend, starting with a solo recital at Tiedke Concert Hall in sunny Winter Park, Florida, tonight. On the program are Bach's Goldberg Variations, which he recorded for Nonesuch Records last year, and works by Mozart and Beethoven. He then takes a winter-trip up north to interview British tenor Ian Bostridge about Schubert's Winterreise at the 92nd Street Y in snowy New York City on Super Bowl Sunday.

---

Richard Goode joins the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conductor Herbert Blomstedt for three performances of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 27, K. 595, at Walt Disney Concert Hall tonight, Saturday, and Super Bowl Sunday. Goode recorded the piece for an album with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for Nonesuch Records some 20 years ago. Also on the program is Bruckner's Symphony No. 9.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reviewing Goode's recent performance of Mozart's Concerto No. 18 with the Milwaukee Symphony, says: "Goode played the Mozart concerto with a captivating mix of technical ease, decisive musical artistry and an air of someone responding to the orchestra and conductor—and even the piece itself—in the moment, moving with inspiration from phrase to phrase and movement to movement."

---

Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra continue their multi-event participation in La Folle Journée festival in Nantes, France, through the weekend. With events that last no more than 45 minutes, the five-day festival aims to reach new audiences of all ages by doing away with the rituals of conventional concerts. Visitors can wander from room to room, each with acoustics suited to the music being performed.

Kremer and the orchestra have a total of six concerts this weekend, two each day, with performances in the Auditorium Nietzsche, Auditorium Descartes, and Salle Kant.

---

Audra McDonald takes a transatlantic turn from her US tour to make her Spanish debut with a performance at Teatro Real in Madrid on Saturday.

---

Brad Mehldau continues his solo tour of Europe with performances at the Concert Hall at KKL Luzern in Switzerland tonight and Cité de la Musique in Strasbourg, France, on Saturday. Mehldau plays several more solo shows in France in the week ahead.

---

Conor Oberst is joined by the band Dawes as special guests for a performance at Plaza Condesa in Mexico City tonight.

---

Sara Watkins and Rodney Crowell join Patty Griffin for two performances at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in Scotland Saturday and Sunday as part of the Celtic Connections festival's special Transatlantic Sessions concerts. The Transatlantic Sessions crew then hits the road for a tour of the United Kingdom in the week ahead, culminating in a performance at Royal Festival Hall in London next Friday.
