The Glass Box, Nonesuch Records' 10-CD collection of works by Philip Glass, is due out at the end of the month and is available for pre-order now in the Nonesuch Store. Yesterday on BBC Radio 3, In Tune featured a discussion with Glass plus three excerpts from works in the box, including the seminal Einstein on the Beach. Lincoln Center has announced that its 50th anniversary season, 2009–10, will include a production of Einstein on the Beach by the New York City Opera in its newly renovated New York State Theater.
The Glass Box, Nonesuch Records' 10-CD collection of works by Philip Glass, is due out at the end of the month and is available for pre-order now in the Nonesuch Store. The composer visited the BBC studios in London for a series of radio interviews to be aired in the coming days.
First up was a stop at BBC Radio 3 for the live broadcast of the In Tune program yesterday afternoon. Glass speaks with host Sean Rafferty about his four-decade career and the upcoming release of the Nonesuch retrospective. You can listen online through September 22 at bbc.co.uk. The segment begins at about 18 minutes into the program, opening with the recording of Knee Plays 3 from the seminal 1976 work Einstein on the Beach, and also includes Movement III from his String Quartet No. 5, performed by Kronos Quartet; and "The Poet Acts," from the film score to The Hours; all from The Glass Box.
Glass will offer more stories and music from the Box this coming Sunday, September 21, on BBC 6 Music, in a two-hour special for the next episode of Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone. Listen live beginning at 5 PM GMT at bbc.co.uk/6music.
