Sara Watkins Announces US Tour Dates for March

Sara Watkins 2012 h-cr by Aaron Redfield

Singer/songwriter/fiddle player Sara Watkins—who closes out her tour of the UK and Ireland with performances in Bristol, Milton Keynes, and Norwich this week—has announced a three-week tour of the United States for March, starting with a performance at the Red Clay Theatre in Duluth, Georgia. The 15-city tour, featuring songs from her 2012 Nonesuch album Sun Midnight Sun, includes stops in Louisville, Cincinnati, Ann Arbor, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and more. Additionally, Watkins will join her brother Sean and special guests for the latest installment of the Watkins Family Hour at Largo in Los Angeles on February 28. See below for all of the currently scheduled tour dates; for additional details and ticket links, go to

Sun Midnight Sun is the follow up to Watkins’s critically acclaimed 2009 self-titled solo debut album, produced by John Paul Jones. The new album, produced by guitarist, singer, and songwriter Blake Mills, includes songs written by Watkins ("You and Me," "Take Up Your Spade") and several collaborations with Mills ("The Foothills," "Be There," "The Accord," "Impossible," and "Lock and Key"), and features special guest appearances by Fiona Apple, Jackson Browne, Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Benmont Tench, and Sean Watkins.

While on tour in the UK, Watkins stopped by the Guardian to talk with journalist Emma John about her music. She also gave John a bluegrass fiddle master class, which you can watch in a video accompanying the feature article at

* Watkins Family Hour

I find your music (what I know of it...Sun Midnight Sun recording, JB DVD, PHC and Watkins Family Hour), pleasing musically, lyrically and happily.

It is fresh, not overly sentimental and affirming...shoves me in love with life.

Uncertain about actual title but the tune about taking up your spade and break ground is...luminous.

I love the way music implies simplicity but is actually always taking chances and stretching.

It's made me want to explore using a violin in songs.

When I share w/ others...the others are grateful.

What a lovely note, Joe, thank you. The song you're thinking of is "Take Up Your Spade." Enjoy:
