Savannah Music Festival 2014: Punch Brothers, Fatoumata Diawara, Bombino

The Savannah Music Festival has announced the line-up for its 25th anniversary season, to be held March 20–April 5, 2014, and among the artists scheduled to perform are several artists familiar to readers of the Nonesuch Journal: Punch Brothers; Chris Thile, in a duo concert with fellow mandolinist Mike Marshall; and Fatoumata Diawara and Bombino sharing a double bill for two shows. The Savannah Music Festival is a 17-day celebration of the musical arts aiming to stimulate arts education, foster economic growth, and unite artists and audiences in Savannah, Georgia. It is the largest musical arts event in the state and one of the more distinctive cross-genre music festivals in the world, as reflected in the artists involved, not least those noted here.

Chris Thile, who is currently on a solo tour of Europe, is joined by Mike Marshall on stage at the Charles H. Morris Center on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 12:30 PM for a wide-ranging duo mandolin program, featuring styles as far reaching as bluegrass, Brazilian choro, Italian folk songs, Celtic medleys, Bach partitas and original compositions. The two have already announced three duo shows in the Pacific Northwest in February and early March.

On the night of March 22, at 8:30 PM, Chris Thile meets up with his fellow Punch Brothers to perform at the Trustees Theater, marking the band's third Savannah Music Festival appearance since 2009. Also performing at the festival from Punch Brothers are Chris Eldridge, on a bill with three fellow guitarists, Julian Lage, Frank Vignola, and Vinny Raniolo, at the Charles H. Morris Center on April 1, and banjoist Noam Pikelny on a double bill with the Becca Stevens Band for two shows at the Morris Center on April 2.

Fatoumata Diawara and Bombino come together on the penultimate night of the festival, Friday, April 4, to perform two double-bill sets at Ships of the Sea North Garden, at 5 PM and 8 PM. Diawara resumes her North American tour in February. Bombino is currently on tour in Switzerland and France and kicks off a North American tour later this month.
