Tony Allen's "Secret Agent" a WNYC Pick of the Week for Its "Fiery Blend of West African Percussion and James Brown Funk"

Tony Allen's Secret Agent, the legendary drummer's recently released World Circuit / Nonesuch Records debut album, was named a CD Pick of the Week by Soundcheck from New York public radio station WNYC. John Schaefer, the show's host, calls Allen the "secret weapon" of fellow Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, but insists that, with the release of the new album, he's sure to be "a secret no longer." On Secret Agent, Allen "leads a crack ensemble, and even sings on a song or two," says Schaefer. "But it's his drumming, a fiery blend of West African percussion and James Brown funk, that propels you headlong through the record." Read more at wnyc.org.

The Boston Globe's Siddhartha Mitter names Allen's forthcoming tour date at the Middle East in Cambridge his critic's pick of upcoming shows, saying Allen remains "vibrant as ever." Allen's North American tour begins with a free set in Toronto's Queens Park on June 12 as part of the Luminato Festival, and includes shows in Madison, Chicago, New York City, Brooklyn, Seattle, and Boonville, California. For more tour information, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

To pick up a copy of the Secret Agent CD with high-quality MP3s of the album included at no additional cost, plus a special discount offer on tickets to the Broadway phenomenon Fela!, head to the Nonesuch Store.
