Pat Metheny's latest Nonesuch album, What's It All About, is out on CD today, with vinyl to follow in two weeks. The Boston Herald gives the album an A-, with reviewer Larry Katz explaining: "Metheny’s thoughtful, loving approach elevates every tune he tackles to a realm of beauty." To celebrate today's release, the album is now streaming in full in MSN Music's Listening Booth. Listen to the album in its entirety at music.msn.com.

Also marking today's release, the Nonesuch Journal has posted the third in a series of videos of Metheny performing songs on the new record, which began with Carly Simon's "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" on Friday and continued with Jobim's "Girl from Ipanema" yesterday, both of which you can watch at nonesuch.com/media. Now comes the third: "Cherish," written by Terry Kirkman, posted below.

“This was a huge hit in the late 1960s," Metheny says of the song made famous by The Association. "That group always had tunes with lots of chords and lots of harmony in the vocals. One day I started playing around with it and while under the hood of the tune I found myself  marveling at all the interesting moves that happen with the chords, especially on the bridge. And I used the same whole-step modulation for the final A section of the song that was on the record, although I added a tag that is really not exactly derived from any obvious single point in the tune."

Watch the performance here and at nonesuch.com/media:

After nearly 40 recordings under his own name, this is the first Pat Metheny album where there is not a single Metheny composition represented. This is a personal view of ten classic songs, some very well known, some less so, filtered through the harmonic and melodic ideology of a modern master with a most individual approach.

To pick up a copy of What's It All About on CD, uncompressed digital FLAC files, and MP3 in the Nonesuch Store, click here; for vinyl, due out June 28, pre-order here. Both CD and vinyl orders include high-quality, 320 kbps MP3s of the album plus the bonus track "'Round Midnight" at checkout.
