Video: Stephen Sondheim Talks with Tony Kushner at the Public Theater

Stephen Sondheim appeared on stage at the Public Theater in New York City last fall to talk with a fellow giant in the American theater, Tony Kushner, upon the publication of the book Finishing the Hat, Sondheim's first-ever collection of his lyrics. The evening, part of the Public Theater's Public Form discussion series, took place on November 29, 2010, and was hosted by Rocco Landesman, the chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. You can now watch excerpts from the event in a new video from the Public, posted below.

As noted earlier this week in the Nonesuch Journal, Stephen Sondheim will receive the Olivier Special Award, in recognition of his contribution to London theatre, at the 2011 Olivier Awards ceremony, taking place this Sunday at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London; the ceremony will conclude with a tribute to Sondheim. The whole evening will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2; there will be live televised coverage via the BBC’s Red Button. For more information, you can read about it in the Nonesuch Journal.

Below is the video, via the Public Theater YouTube channel, of Sondheim discussing his life in the theater last fall:
