Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile's new solo album, Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, Vol. 1, was released earlier this year on Nonesuch Records. The album comprises three works written for solo violin: Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001; Partita No. 1 in B minor, BWV 1002; and Sonata No. 2 in A minor, BWV 1003. Thile has now performed the complete G minor sonata for a new video, which is available below, via his YouTube channel, and at nonesuch.com/media.

Chris Thile is in the midst of a solo tour of North America, performing music from the new album and more. He is currently touring the Midwest, performing at the Southern Theatre in Columbus, Ohio, tonight, followed by stops in Evanston, St. Louis, Ann Arbor, and Louisville this week. He then heads northeast, including a sold-out show in New York City in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. For additional details and tickets, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

Bach: Sonatas and Partitas, which was produced by Edgar Meyer, was released to critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. "His timing is meticulous," says The New Yorker, "but his version also has the liveliness that improvising musicians sometimes can bring to written material." Gramophone exclaims: "This is extraordinary playing from an extraordinary musician who is willing to stretch stylistic and technical boundaries to further his art while paying homage to one of the greatest composers of all time."

To pick up a copy of the new album, head to iTunes or the Nonesuch Store, where CD and vinyl orders include a download of the complete album at checkout, and MP3 and FLAC files are available to purchase as well.

The original cast album of Adam Guettel’s Broadway musical Days of Wine and Roses, with a book by Craig Lucas, starring Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James, will be released on CD on May 17, following its recent digital release.  “Repeated listenings compound the amazement,” the New York Times says of Guettel’s work, which “has always offered that kind of challenge—initially leaving a feeling of: Beautiful, but wait, I need to hear it again—and those up for it have a way of coming away shining like Moses down from the Mount. The new score has the same effect.”
