Wilco's new album, Wilco (the album), is due out on Nonesuch in another month, and the critical response has already begun, including, this week, from the band's two hometown papers, the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. The Sun-Times gives the album 3.5 stars, asserting that "the band has cemented a reputation as one of the most creative forces in rock today" and concluding that its new songs "stand beside the best that the band has given us." The Tribune calls the band's current members "the most technically accomplished of Wilco’s many lineups ... and Wilco (the album) is a compendium of its best moves."

Wilco (the album) is set for a June 30 release from Nonesuch Records, on CD and a vinyl LP, and is now available for pre-order in the Nonesuch Store. The LP is pressed on audiophile-quality, 180-gram vinyl and includes the full album on CD as well. For a sneak peek, visit the band's site, wilcoworld.net, where the complete album is now streaming. American Songwriter says it's well worth checking out: "[W]e’ve heard the record, and we can tell you it’s worth listening to over a pay phone submerged underwater. It’s that good."

Wilco (the album) is due out June 30 on Nonesuch, and Billboard offers a hint of what's to come, stating that, "musically, Wilco (the album) offers a little bit of everything while making good on frontman Jeff Tweedy's stated goal to use 'the studio as another instrument.'" The article offers insight on each of the album's tracks, including its "majestic" closer and "a gorgeous duet" with Feist. Blurt magazine's review of the band's new concert DVD, Ashes of American Flags, compares it favorably to Scorsese's The Last Waltz, leading the reviewer to commit to Wilco as "the greatest American rock 'n' roll band."

In a week that brought big news from Wilco about their forthcoming studio album's Nonesuch release, there's now more good news from the band: They're offering fans a new recording of Woody Guthrie's Depression Era song "Jolly Banker," on their site, with 100% of the suggested donation going to support the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives. Jeff Tweedy tells American Public Media's Marketplace how Guthrie's words, even seven decades later, still resonate, and how the band got to see an all-too-rare side of America while on the tour documented in their new concert film, Ashes of American Flags.

Wilco has completed work on their forthcoming album, due out June 30 on Nonesuch Records, and, after much anticipation, it now comes complete with a title: Wilco (the album). "There’s a little something for everyone on the group’s new disc," says Rolling Stone. Wilco's performance at the New Orleans JazzFest last weekend was their last US gig till June, and, says Rolling Stone, "The band presented its friendliest, most rootsy face ... Throughout, the band’s movement from a whisper to a screech happened organically." "The fresh air favors Wilco," reports the Times-Picayune. "Jeff Tweedy and company delivered thrilling, nuanced sets ... [and] stamped an exclamation point on ... the day."

Wilco helped mark national Record Store Day this past Saturday with the limited release of their new concert DVD, Ashes of American Flags, through independent music retailers and on nonesuch.com. Fans in Knoxville got to celebrate up-close with Wilco as the band signed copies of the DVD at the local store The Disc Exchange, video coverage of which was posted online by the Knoxville News. Jeff Tweedy spoke with Spin about Wilco's forthcoming studio album, due out in late spring, described as "a mix of pastoral Americana rock (think 2007's Sky Blue Sky) and experimental studio sounds (2002's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)."

For the past few days, Wilco has made a home-away-from-home in a very welcoming Milwaukee, Wisconsin, including Jeff Tweedy's first pitch in Monday's Brewers game and a sixth-inning sausage race with Glenn Kotche and Mikael Jorgensen. Wilco also played the first of two sold-out nights at the Pabst Theater last night, in which, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says, the band "gave a dusty jewel of a performance," concluding of this "gorgeous patchwork quilt of the set" that "when the entire band converged ... the music exploded beautifully." Tonight's show will be webcast live on wilcoworld.net.

Ashes of American Flags, the new film by Christoph Green and Fugazi’s Brendan Canty documenting the live Wilco concert experience, is due out on DVD in the Nonesuch Store on Saturday, April 18, and will be screened at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado, tonight. "The members of Wilco are road dogs," says the Colorado Daily, an idea brought to life in the film, which sees them playing "playing blazing, sweaty sets at historic concert halls ... The movie’s concert scenes show the members of Wilco celebrating every stage moment, while the audiences are mesmerized with every moment of the performances."

Jeff Tweedy performed two solo sets this past weekend, at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, Massachusetts, Friday night, and at Beacon High School in upstate New York, in a fundraiser for the Clearwater organization co-founded by Pete Seeger, who also performed. Rolling Stone says "Tweedy, like Seeger, engaged the crowd throughout his set ... He also sang with crisp vocals and rich vocal inflection on 'Passenger Side' and played haunting harmonica lines on 'Via Chicago.'” The Republican says Tweedy was equally humble and successful with the sold-out crowd at the Calvin: "Tweedy was magnificent over the course of his 25-song set, recounting the Wilco catalog in acoustic form."

Wilco's forthcoming as-yet-untitled Nonesuch release is featured in Rolling Stone's Spring Music Preview, a look "inside 45 of the Year's Biggest Albums." The magazine talks to Jeff Tweedy and Nels Cline about the recording process for the new record. "After the live, urgent feel of 2007's Sky Blue Sky," says Rolling Stone, "Wilco is exploring more studio experimentation ... anchored once again by Tweedy's sly, insightful and often heartbreaking lyrics." The article suggests, "An early preview of the disc gives off a strong country vibe, with lots of pedal steel and acoustic guitar."
