Album Covers from the Explorer Series: Indonesia

In the late 1960s, Nonesuch Records launched the Nonesuch Explorer Series, presenting indigenous music from around the world. It was “the series that introduced countless listeners to music from afar," says the New York Times, "opening up the delights of world music by mingling the scholarly and the sensuous."

One of the most popular of the early albums was Music from the Morning of the World, featuring producer David Lewiston's 1966 field recordings of the Balinese gamelan. It was inducted into the National Recording Registry of "culturally significant" sound recordings in 2008.

The revival of the Nonesuch Explorer Series began in August 2002 with the re-release of 13 volumes of African music, followed by the Indonesian records the following year. The re-issued discs include remastered music and redesigned packaging, with covers featuring photos from the region found in the rich Magnum Photos archives.
