Natalie Merchant: The Making of "Leave Your Sleep"

In this 10-minute documentary, Natalie Merchant takes viewers on a tour through Leave Your Sleep, her Nonesuch debut album and a project years in the making. Merchant tells the stories of the poets whose words she set to music and performs several songs off the album.

"Leave Your Sleep is different from anything I've ever done, in every way," Merchant reveals. "I don't know if I'll ever be able to accomplish something on this scale again. I'm really looking forward to unleashing it on the world."

I was sold the second the album was announced and even more so after watching the documentary. Thanks for making this documentary available. Natalie Merchant is amazing and should be very proud of this album!

An artist work should expose the audience to something they may not have searched out on their own. Art should be created by an artist whom has no agenda ,but just a drive to create. This project is an example of that- and a rare task for someone in todays musical landscape

Congratulations on this new project, Natalie! You stir the mind, the body, and the soul!

Thank you for sharing the stories of these poets and the power of the "word" and your music.

i just be waiting for this album...

An unbelievable artist - I have been eagerly waiting a new release and I am excited to listen! I was just listening to Life is Sweet in my car and hoping it would pull me out of a funk - it did!

I am a ship builders boy and I'm in love with your voice. Grateful to God for creating your creative visions.

Get This Album- An amazing work which encompasses the best of American Music and Beyond from one of America's truly Great Artist, not to mention one of the smartest. I don't know if it is her Pet Sounds but it might be her Smile. As equally ambitious and well produced as it is Beautiful. If you love Billy Holiday and Nina Simone, get this album. If you love Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, get this album. If you love Brian Wilson, get this album. If you love Scott Joplin or Stephen Foster, get this Album. If you like Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff, get this album. If you like the Andrews Sisters and Tommy Dorsey, get this Album. If you love Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and the Blind Boys of Alabama, get this album. If you love E.E. Cummings or Jack Prelutsky, get this album. If you love Mother Goose and Childish Wonder, get this album. Etc. Lastly, if you are a Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs fan, you have this Album (hint hint). ;0)

She has done it again, simply mesmerizing. Every one of her albums manages to penetrate my soul and this album is no exception. No other artist has this longing affect on me. Love you work, Natalie!

I am speechless. This album has awakened in me the awe and wonder and mystery of childhood all over again... I am transported to so many exciting and unusual places - my imagination has suddenly run wild and I love it! The rhymes and fairy tales and folk tales have made the smells and tastes of childhood re-live in my soul and I am forever thankful that this magnificent piece of art has been given to the world. Never could I have imagined a more appropriate way to honor the writers than with such beautiful and haunting melodies that seem to hit every emotion and every long forgotten childish dream. Thank-you Natalie!!!!
