Three weeks before There Will Be Blood first hits select screens in the US, the Paul Thomas Anderson film is already one of the most talked-about films of the year, not least for its haunting score by Jonny Greenwood. Today the Nonesuch Journal brings you an exclusive interview with the composer, in which he discusses everything from his musical influences—from Penderecki to the Pixies—to his use of the ondes martenot, an early electronic instrument found in such seminal 20th-century works as Messiaen's Turangalîla-Symphonie. Nonesuch will release the complete There Will Be Blood soundtrack December 18.

Jonny Greenwood is featured among the "pitch perfect" film composers showcased in the Los Angeles Times. In the paper, Dennis Lim writes that Greenwood's score for Paul Thomas Anderson's new film, There Will Be Blood, marks an even greater role for the already major part music plays in Anderson's films. "In Paul Thomas Anderson's films, music is not just significant," writes Lim, "it's often front and center, impossible to ignore ... and his use of music reaches new heights of inspiration in There Will Be Blood."

Two More Jonny Greenwood Tracks Unveiled

On the same day that Nonesuch Radio has added to its playlist two tracks from Jonny Greenwood's There Will Be Blood score, The Playlist, a website dedicated to all things movie music, is streaming two additional songs from the soundtrack: "Proven Lands" and "There Will Be Blood." The film—"pretty much at the top of everyone's most anticipated list," says the site—will be in limited release December 26, and the soundtrack will be available December 18 from Nonesuch.

The New York Post's film critic Lou Lumenick recently caught a preview of Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood and is adding to the film's Oscar buzz . "One thing is clear," he writes. "The amazing Daniel Day-Lewis is the top contender for Best Actor honors. Day, who has been leading prognosticators' charts ... for several weeks, is unforgettable as an oilman undone by his avariciousness in this full-blooded, early 20th-century epic ..." Harp magazine looks at the film's score by Jonny Greenwood, including a statement from the composer about his process for creating music for this "full-blooded" film.

Variety on Jonny Greenwood's Epic "There Will Be Blood" Score

Variety adds There Will Be Blood to its "Contenders" list for likely and deserving Oscar nominees. Citing Paul Thomas Anderson's past cinematic successes, Boogie Nights and Magnolia, Variety says that while the director has moved on from the "big tapestry" of those films, "he matches it here—and then some—with the big portrait."

On the LA Times film blog Extended Play, Todd Martens reports from a screening earlier this week of Paul Thomas Anderson's new film, There Will Be Blood. The director was in attendance and spoke afterwards about the film. Martens hopes that the "fascinating," "startling" score by Jonny Greenwood gets through to Oscar voters "for the original score nomination it deserves."
