  • Bill Frisell, Glenn Kotche Perform at MusicNOW Festival This Week

    Bill Frisell and Glenn Kotche will be on hand in Cincinnati, Ohio, this week as the third annual MusicNOW festival, organized by native son Bryce Dessner of The National, gets under way at Memorial Hall tonight. Kotche performed in the inaugural MusicNOW in 2006 and returns this Friday to perform with Dessner and Bang on a Can on a double bill with Dirty Projectors. Frisell makes his MusicNOW debut tomorrow night.

  • Chicago Tribune Recommends Upcoming Wilco, Magnetic Fields Shows

    The Chicago Tribune music critic Greg Kot recommends two upcoming area performances from Nonesuch artists that just go to show that "the real action during the winter is in the clubs." Wilco will set up shop at the Riviera for a five-night residency, February 15, 16, 18, 19, and 20. The following month, on March 14, The Magnetic Fields take that stage at the Old Town School of Folk Music, with songs from their upcoming release, Distortion.     Toumani Diabate performed a special solo set last night for a packed crowd at Manhattan's Other Music record store, and he's set to play New York's Bowery Ballroom tonight joined by his full Symmetric Orchestra, with Argentine-born pianist/composer Fernando Otero opening the show. It's sure to be a stellar set, judging by the band's Tuesday night show in Chicago, which the Chicago Tribune says provided some welcome heat to a frigid winter's night.

    Joshua Redman will be celebrating his 39th birthday two days early with a live in-studio performance tonight at 9 PM ET on the Live @ BJ's show on Beyond Jazz, XM Satellite Radio Channel 72. Joshua will play with his Elastic Band, featuring Sam Yahel on keys and Brian Blade on drums. Beyond Jazz will air an encore presentation of the show on Sunday at 7 PM ET.

    The schedule for the 2008 Ravinia Festival has been announced, and among the 150 events to be held during its run this summer will be performances by Punch Brothers (July 21), The Gipsy Kings (August 2), and Kronos Quartet featuring Glenn Kotche (September 3).

  • Sister Rosetta Memorial Benefit Concert to Be Held This Friday

    Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell has named this Friday, January 11, Sister Rosetta Tharpe Day, reports Dave Howell in the Morning Call. A concert will be held that night at the Keswick Theatre outside of Philadelphia to benefit the memorial fund established in the singer's name; she died in 1973. The concert will feature such gospel and folk legends as the Dixie Hummingbirds and Odetta.

  • T Bone Burnett to Perform on CMT Plant/Krauss Special

    CMT, the country music television channel, reports that T Bone Burnett will appear as a special guest on the station's Crossroads: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, which will debut on February 11 at 8 PM. The show was recorded in October and features songs off the 2007 album Raising Sand, the Burnett-produced collaboration between Plant and Krauss.
