Caroline Shaw’s Evergreen, featuring Shaw and Attacca Quartet, is out now. Evergreen is five original works by Shaw: three pieces written for string quartet—Three Essays, Blueprint, and The Evergreen—and two songs written for string quartet and voice. It also includes an interpretation of a twelfth century French poem, which the Quartet performs with Shaw on vocals. With one month till the October 14 release of The Blue Hour, a song cycle written collaboratively by the female composers Rachel Grimes, Angélica Negrón, Shara Nova, Caroline Shaw, and Sarah Kirkland Snider, comes an album trailer featuring footage from the recording sessions with the chamber orchestra A Far Cry and vocal soloist Nova, narrated by the composers. Caroline Shaw and Attacca Quartet have released “And So,” from their upcoming album together, Evergreen, due September 23. “And So” is part of Shaw’s Is a Rose trilogy. The Blue Hour, a song cycle born of a collaboration among five composers—Rachel Grimes, Angélica Negrón, Shara Nova, Caroline Shaw, and Sarah Kirkland Snider—will be released October 14 on New Amsterdam / Nonesuch Records. The piece was commissioned and performed by the chamber orchestra A Far Cry, who are joined by singer Shara Nova. Set to excerpts from Carolyn Forché’s epic poem On Earth, the music follows one woman’s journey through the liminal space between life and death via thousands of hallucinatory and non-linear images. Exploring memories of childhood, war, love, and loss, The Blue Hour amplifies the beauty, pain, and fragility of human life from a collective female perspective.

Evergreen, performed by Caroline Shaw and Attacca Quartet, is due September 23 on Nonesuch Records. The album is five original works by Shaw: three pieces for string quartet—Three Essays, Blueprint, and The Evergreen, which Shaw describes as an offering to a tree she encountered in an evergreen forest on an island off Vancouver—and two songs for string quartet and voice, including Other Song, which she also performed on her 2021 album Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part. Also included is an interpretation of a 12th-century French poem for quartet and voice. Nonesuch Store pre-orders include a limited-edition, 8”x8” autographed print of the score for The Evergreen.

Congratulations to vocalist, violinist, composer, and producer Caroline Shaw, who was one of ten individuals to receive an honorary degree from her alma mater Yale University for distinction in their fields at Yale’s 321st graduation ceremony on Monday. She was given an honorary Mus.D. Shaw earned her master’s degree from Yale in 2007 after graduating from Rice University in 2004. “The 10 individuals we honor this morning serve as examples to you, our graduates, to encourage you to aspire to excellence and to value those elements of human character that they embody: creativity, curiosity, discipline, integrity, and a passion for public service,” Yale President Peter Salovey said during the university-wide Commencement ceremony.

Congratulations to Caroline Shaw and Rhiannon Giddens with Francesco Turrisi, who won Grammy Awards at the 64th Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony today. Shaw won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition, for Narrow Sea, written for and performed by Sō Percussion, Dawn Upshaw, and Gilbert Kalish. Giddens and Turrisi won the Grammy for Best Folk Album for They’re Calling Me Home.

Caramoor, the cultural arts venue on an 80-plus-acre estate in Katonah, New York, has announced its 2022 summer season, including performances by several Nonesuch artists: Molly Tuttle, Kronos Quartet, Dawn Upshaw, Rhiannon Giddens, Caroline Shaw, and Rachael & Vilray. "This summer is one of the most dynamic in our history," exclaims Caramoor’s President and CEO Edward J. Lewis III.
