The Staves have released "Nazareth," the band’s first new music since its 2017 EP with yMusic. "We recorded 'Nazareth' in one take on a field recorder sat outside the studio in the summer of 2018," says the trio. "The sun was shining and the birds were singing. We tried recording it in the studio but just kept coming back to this version. It seemed to have the magic.  The song was intended to be in the spirit of an Irish blessing or a kind of a prayer, asking to be kept safe—but it pretty quickly became a more personal and introspective lyric. Moments of glory quickly faded. Worrying, trying. How we mean everything and nothing at the same time. To everyone, to no one."

"We’ve spent the last couple years writing songs and recording demos in various places round the world, assembling the bones of what will be our next album," say The Staves, who have released a new demo track, "Nothing's Gonna Happen." "This song was written in a bedroom in east London and, later, recorded in a studio in Wisconsin. It’s been a while since we put new music out and we thought that seeing as this is the season of giving, we’d let one of these demos surface for anybody who is interested to hear ... We appreciate our wonderful fans so much and thought it would be a cool thing to show you a small sliver of the process."

The Way Is Read, an album by the English trio The Staves and NYC-based ensemble yMusic, released digitally last week, is now available on limited-edition vinyl. "Developed from a live collaboration," says a four-star review in the Evening Standard, "the siblings' voices are blended seamlessly with the instrumentation on haunting, experimental compositions where folk and contemporary classical meet halfway." The Staves and yMusic release The Way Is Read, a new album stemming from a collaboration at Justin Vernon's Eaux Claires Festival, digitally on November 24, on vinyl December 1. "We wanted to feel like instruments and join in with some of yMusic's existing work," says The Staves's Emily Staveley-Taylor, "using our voices in ways we hadn't previously explored." Rob Moose of yMusic adds: "It was as much a thrill to hear songs emerge organically over sections of intricate chamber music as it was satisfying to strip songs of the instrument that created them in order to craft new connective tissue." The groups perform at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and on A Prairie Home Companion in December. Pre-order the album to download the track "Trouble on My Mind" now; see a video for the song here.
