Congratulations to Ambrose Akinmusire and to Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion, who have been nominated for Edison Jazz and Klassiek Awards in the Netherlands, respectively, for their latest Nonesuch albums: Akinmusire's honey from a winter stone for Jazz: International and Shaw and Sō's GRAMMY–winning Rectangles and Circumstance for Extraordinary Classic.

Composer and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s 2025 album honey from a winter stone, which he calls a “self-portrait,” features improvisational vocalist Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizer, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos Quartet. “For arguably the most technically gifted trumpeter of his generation, a lot of Ambrose Akinmusire’s breakthroughs actually come from letting go of standards and structures," says the New York Times. "Lately Akinmusire has been making some of the most intimate, spellbinding music of his career.”

Rectangles and Circumstance, which won the GRAMMY Award earlier this year for Best Chamber Music / Small Ensemble Performance, comprises ten songs co-written and performed by Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion. Shaw and Sō's Eric Cha-Beach and Adam Sliwinski "sourced a group of nineteenth-century poems that shaped its expressive mode [and] ended up using verses by Christina Rosetti, Emily Brontë, Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, and William Blake," says Sliwinski. "The lyrics on this album by members of the band contain wordplay that explores the same profound feelings explored by Blake and Dickinson.” Shaw and Sō co-produced the album with Grammy-winning engineer Jonathan Low (The National, Taylor Swift).

The ceremony for both jazz and classical awards will take place on October 6 at the AFAS Theater in Leusden, Netherlands. For details on all the nominations, visit edisons.nl.

Trumpeter/composer Ambrose Akinmusire and guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson's album Slo-Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings is out now. It features four new compositions by each musician plus one collaboration. The duo, long admirers of each other’s musicianship, began playing together periodically back in 2009. They rehearsed the music on Slo-Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings in January 2025, just before performing it at the NYC club The Stone; they recorded the album the next day at Sear Sound. “I think it’s partly a shared aesthetic and an ease of communication. I feel comfortable to try whatever,” Halvorson says. Akinmusire concurs, “I think it’s rare to find an improviser that all goes and nothing has to go at all. It’s rare to feel like you don’t have to do anything and you can do anything. And that’s what I love about playing with Mary.”
