"If you asked a room full of music critics to list the greatest American rock bands performing today, chances are a large majority of them would mention Wilco," says CBS Sunday Morning in its profile of the band. Rolling Stone's Austin Scaggs tells CBS that Wilco's "got it all ... great lyrics, great melody, great emotion," placing Jeff Tweedy among the "true songwriters," like Bob Dylan.

"If you asked a room full of music critics to list the greatest American rock bands performing today, chances are a large majority of them would mention Wilco." So said CBS Sunday Morning in its introduction to the show's profile of the band on yesterday's episode of the Sunday favorite. While Wilco has remained a consistent critical favorite and a favorite of die-hard fans over the years, the show suggests, it seems that now, with their latest Nonesuch release, Wilco (the album), "the secret is out."

For the segment, CBS correspondent Cynthia Bowers spoke with Jeff Tweedy about Wilco's 15-year history as a "cult favorite" and what's in store now that their seventh studio album has proven to be their fastest-selling yet. It seems, says Bowers, that "the little band that could is finally getting some big-time respect."

One of those music critics to have recognized the band's efforts early on is Rolling Stone's Austin Scaggs, who tells CBS that Wilco is a band that "has got it all," as does their music: "great lyrics, great melody, great band, great emotion." Scaggs places Tweedy among the "true songwriters," comparing him to the likes of Bob Dylan and Neil Young, musicians who "treat their music as their life's work."
