Congratulations to David Byrne’s American Utopia, which has just been announced a recipient of a Special Tony Award for the 2019–2020 Broadway season. Special Tony Awards are presented to outstanding productions, artists, and organizations that do not fall into any of the competitive categories. This year's two other recipients are the anti-racism advocacy organization Broadway Advocacy Coalition and the show Freestyle Love Supreme. The 74th Tony Awards will be presented on Sunday, September 26, on Paramount+, from 7pm ET, followed by The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back! on CBS.

"In what has been such an unusual year in theatre, we are thrilled to be presenting these Special Tony Awards to three such deserving recipients," said Heather Hitchens, CEO and President of the American Theatre Wing and Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League, in a statement. They honor the two shows as productions that "take theatre to the next level, delivering outside-of-the-box presentations that have gone beyond the stage and brought theatre into the homes of millions of people around the world."

David Byrne’s American Utopia will return to Broadway this fall at the St. James Theatre, 246 West 44th Street, in New York City. As previously announced, performances will begin Friday, September 17, 2021. The highly acclaimed production features David Byrne with returning band members Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, Angie Swan, and Bobby Wooten III.

Tickets are on sale now at americanutopiabroadway.com. All ticketholders with valid prior bookings have been e-mailed with their performance information. Ticketholders may contact their point of booking with any questions or requests.

Nonesuch Records released both the original 2018 American Utopia album, which inspired the Broadway show, as well as the cast album for David Byrne’s American Utopia, with music and lyrics by David Byrne.
