Hannah Carlen has been named Nonesuch Records’ Vice President of Marketing and Communications. In her new role, Carlen oversees marketing, sales, publicity, new media, and content creation for the Warner Music Group label.

Prior to joining Nonesuch, Carlen was Senior Director of Marketing and Communications for Secretly Group and All Flowers Group, where she worked on marketing campaigns for artists like Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, Khruangbin, Mitski, and Faye Webster, among many others. Carlen reports to Nonesuch President David Bither and is based at the label’s global headquarters in New York City.

Carlen succeeds the label’s former marketing chief, Dan Cohen, who was with the company since 2018.

“The stability of Nonesuch’s management team has been one of our great strengths over the years. Dan made significant contributions to Nonesuch over nearly a decade with us and we are now fortunate to have someone of Hannah’s expertise and judgment to take over this critical role,” said Bither. “I am grateful that Nonesuch will benefit from the rich experience she brings us.”

Carlen added, “Nonesuch is simply one of the best and most essential record labels of all time. I have loved so many of these artists for so long, and Nonesuch’s pioneering, beyond-genre point of view is without modern comparison.”

She continues, “Equally special is the home that Nonesuch makes for artists, the ways this team supports their work, and the patience and care Nonesuch brings to artist development. I am honored beyond belief to have the trust of its leadership, and thrilled to find an immediate friend and mentor in Nonesuch’s President, David Bither. I’m grateful to him for the opportunity, to Dan Cohen for his invaluable stewardship preceding me, and to Nonesuch’s expert senior leaders, who have been so welcoming already.”

Hannah Carlen started her music career in Portland, Oregon, where she worked in radio promotion, focused on the noncomm and Triple A formats and promoting releases from artists such as Daft Punk, J Dilla, PJ Harvey, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Portishead, Pet Shop Boys, Raphael Saadiq, and others.

She joined the Secretly Group family of labels in 2011 as Radio Director. There, she led radio promotion for breakthrough releases from artists like The War on Drugs, Phosphorescent, Angel Olsen, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Sharon Van Etten, as well as select Secretly Distribution releases like Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell and Mac DeMarco’s This Old Dog. In the fall of 2017, she became Secretly Group’s first US Marketing Director, working with a close-knit marketing leadership team on all releases. Carlen expanded and developed the department during her eight years in that role.

In 2024, she also joined the marketing leadership of All Flowers Group (Ghostly International, drink sum wtr) to mentor their marketing team and collaborate on campaigns for artists like Ginger Root, Annahstasia, Duae Saleh, THEY., Yaya Bey, and others.

"One of my favorite music labels has a momentous birthday: Nonesuch Records is turning 60 this year," says Deepa Fernandes, co-host of NPR's Here & Now, who spoke with Nonesuch President David Bither to mark the occasion. "Nonesuch has likely influenced your musical diet even if you didn't know it." "It's very hard to say what is a Nonesuch record," Bither says. "It's not a particular genre, but maybe it represents a particular kind of ambition and originality. There's a passionate audience for the music we've tried to champion." You can hear their conversation and several musical selections from over the years here.

"Recently we announced a variety of activities that would take place in 2024 to celebrate Nonesuch’s 60th Anniversary," writes Nonesuch Records President David Bither in the Nonesuch Journal. "But I would like for a moment to reflect on the contribution of the individual most responsible for what Nonesuch has come to stand for: Bob Hurwitz, who ran Nonesuch from 1984 to 2016 and was our Chairman Emeritus from 2017 to 2023." You can read his note here.
