"Her approach is entirely unique, inventive, expressive, and quietly radical," David Mayfield guest host of NPR's Mountain Stage, says of Yasmin Williams, who performs songs from her Nonesuch debut album, Acadia, on the show. "She literally redefines what the guitar can be and how it can sound ... From the moment she picks up a guitar, you know you're witnessing something truly original."
Guitarist and composer Yasmin Williams was on NPR's Mountain Stage, performing songs from her Nonesuch debut album, Acadia, and more from Morgantown, West Virginia. "Her approach is entirely unique, inventive, expressive, and quietly radical," says guest host David Mayfield. "She literally redefines what the guitar can be and how it can sound ... From the moment she picks up a guitar, you know you're witnessing something truly original." You can hear her at one hour into the episode, also featuring Eric Bibb, Moira Smiley & The Rhizome Quartet, Twisted Pine, and The McCrary Sisters, here via Spotify and Apple Podcasts:
Acadia, Williams's most sonically expansive work to date, is nine original, mostly instrumental tracks written and produced by her, and features her on various guitars, banjo, calabash drum, tap shoes, and kora. She is joined by an eclectic cast of collaborators—including Immanuel Wilkins, Dom Flemons, Aoife O’Donovan, William Tyler, Darlingside, and others—creating a folk music that reflects the wide range of musical influences that have inspired her throughout her life. You can get it and hear it here.
Williams joins St. Paul and the Broken Bones and The Wood Brothers on tour in July, with stops in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Missouri. Details and tickets here.
