Little Island in New York City has announced its 2025 summer season, and among the artists performing in its outdoor spaces are Davóne Tines, Laurie Anderson, Sam Amidon, Jeremy Denk, and Ringdown, in addition to several concerts curated by Cécile McLorin Salvant.

The Lee Breuer / Bob Telson collaboration The Gospel at Colonus—of which Nonesuch released the original cast recording featuring the Blind Boys of Alabama, in 1985—is being performed at The Amph on Little Island from July 8 to 26. The production, directed by Shayok Misha Chowdhury with music direction by James Hall, features a cast that includes Davóne Tines, whose debut solo album, ROBESON, was released last September after having premiered at Little Island. With book and original lyrics by Breuer and original music and adapted lyrics by Telson, The Gospel at Colonus is a retelling of Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus, set in the Black Pentecostal church. The New York Times calls it "an exhilarating musical celebration." The New Yorker says it's "a masterpiece."

Laurie Anderson, Sam Amidon, DM Stith, Martha Wainwright, and others are among the performers who will celebrate the music of Arthur Russell in a marathon event, Arthur Russell: The Platform on the Ocean, curated by Thomas Bartlett, in The Amph on Sunday, August 10. The program will embrace the breadth of Russell’s work, from art-pop to folk to disco. Amidon returns to Little Island on Sunday, August 31, to lead a free participatory singalong of shape note singing in The Playground at 6:30pm.

Jeremy Denk and fellow pianist Conor Hanick give a number of free recitals, performing pieces for one piano and four hands, in The Glade on Little Island August 21–24 and 27–28 at 10pm. The program changes nightly, featuring works by Ives, Ravel, and Liszt, and will include special guests to be announced.

Ringdown, the cinematic electro-pop duo of Danni Lee Parpan and Caroline Shaw, will perform in Seven Scenes, a new evening of dance and music for which they wrote the music, conceived, choreographed, and directed by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, in The Amph August 22–28. The run is produced in association with the American Modern Opera Company, AMOC*. Nonesuch will release Ringdown's debut album, Lady on the Bike, on May 9.

Additionally, Cécile McLorin Salvant curates a series of evening performances of jazz music in The Glade, June 19, June 22, July 17–20, and July 25–26, all at 10pm, with a series of guests to be announced.

Rhiannon Giddens reunites with her former Carolina Chocolate Drops bandmate Justin Robinson on What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow, out now. Produced by Giddens and Joseph "joebass" DeJarnette, the album features Giddens on banjo and Robinson on fiddle, playing 18 of their favorite North Carolina tunes. Many were learned from their late mentor, legendary North Carolina Piedmont musician Joe Thompson; one is from another musical hero, the late Etta Baker. Giddens and Robinson recorded outdoors at Thompson’s and Baker’s North Carolina homes, as well as the former plantation Mill Prong House, accompanied by the sounds of nature. You can watch eight performance videos from the album here. Giddens leads her first-ever festival, Biscuits & Banjos, in Durham, NC, next weekend, then goes on tour with Robinson.
