Happy Friday the 13th, Valentine’s Day weekend, and President's Day long weekend in the US.

---

Bass-baritone Davóne Tines joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniele Rustioni, at Barbican Hall in London tonight. Currently an artist-in-residence at the Barbican, Tines performs ANTHEM—collaboratively arranged by Tines, Caroline Shaw, Michael Schachter, and Tyshawn Sorey, with text by poet Mahogany L. Browne. Created for the United States’ 250th anniversary, the work asks what a nation is, and what it might yet be. The program also features works by Leonard Bernstein and Rachmaninoff. Tines released his solo debut recording, ROBESON, on which he grapples with the legacy of a hero, on Nonesuch in 2024 and performs on the first recording of John Adams’s opera Girls of the Golden West from the same year.

---

Sérgio and Odair Assad continue their 60th Anniversary Farewell Tour in Oregon at The Shedd Institute’s Shedd Jaqua Concert Hall in Eugene tonight and Portland State University’s Lincoln Recital Hall in Portland on Saturday, followed by a show at the University of Arizona's Holsclaw Hall in Tucson on Monday. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of their Nonesuch debut album, Latin American Music for Two Guitars. On the album, the brothers—"the best two-guitar team in existence, maybe even in history" (Washington Post)—perform music by Astor Piazzolla, Leo Brouwer, Hermeto Pascoal, Radamés Gnattali, Alberto Ginastera, and Sérgio himself.

---

Previews of David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's musical Here Lies Love have begun at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, with performances continuing all this weekend and through April 5. The original 2010 album version of Here Lies Love received its first vinyl release to coincide with the 2023 premiere Broadway production of the musical. This double-disc song cycle about the rise and fall of the Philippines’ notorious Imelda Marcos was performed by a dream cast drawn from the worlds of indie rock, alt country, R&B, and pop. “Ingenious,” said the New York Times. “Insidiously infective songs.” The off-Broadway original cast recording was released in 2014.

---

Pianist Jeremy Denk gives a solo recital at the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon, New York, on Sunday, as part of its piano festival. The program features music by women composers from Clara Schumann to Meredith Monk, alongside pieces by Brahms and Robert Schumann, whose work he performs on his 2019 album, c. 1300–c. 2000.

---

Mary Halvorson celebrates Valentine's Day with a performance with The Out Louds—Ben Goldberg on clarinet, Tomas Fujiwara on drums—at The Stone in New York City.

---

Gabriel Kahane joins the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kwamé Ryan, to perform Pattern of the Rail: Six Orchestral Songs from his Book of Travelers at Belk Theater in Charlotte, North Carolina, tonight. The program also includes works by Dani Howard and Tchaikovsky. Book of Travelers, Kahane’s Nonesuch debut album, was composed during a train journey across the United States that began the day after the 2016 Presidential election. This gallery of portraits of strangers met in restaurant cars is also the search for a shared humanity in a divided nation.

---

Pianist Brad Mehldau gives a sold-out solo performance at Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam tonight and at Tonhalle in Zurich on Monday. Mehldau’s Ride into the Sun—a songbook record of music by the late singer, songwriter, and guitarist Elliott Smith—was released last year. It made year's best lists from Mojo, Jazzwise, Record Collector, PopMatters, and more.

---

Mandy Patinkin continues his JukeBox tour with pianist Adam Ben-David at the sold-out Oklahoma State University’s McKnight Center in Stillwater on Saturday.
