Flea is at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island, for Newport Jazz Festival. He and the band on his first full-length solo album, Honora—album producer and saxophonist Josh Johnson, guitarist Jeff Parker, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Deantoni Parks—perform at Fort Stage on Sunday afternoon.
Ambrose Akinmusire is at Newport Jazz as well, joining the Linda May Han Oh Trio and Tyshawn Sorey on the Harbor Stage on Saturday afternoon. Slo-Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings, Akinmusire’s album with guitarist and composer Mary Halvorson, was released last month on Nonesuch. Rhiannon Giddens continues her American Tunes: Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing series this weekend, joined by Mavis Staples, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. They play Hellbender by the Orange Peel in Asheville, North Carolina, on Saturday and The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee, on Sunday.
