Laurie Anderson, who has just been named a Kyoto Prize laureate, is joined by the jazz band Sexmob for a free performance at SummerStage in New York City’s Central Park tonight. Anderson and the band’s new triple-LP, double-CD set, Let X=X, released last month on Nonesuch, was recorded live on their 2023 tour and features 23 songs, including favorites from throughout Anderson’s career performed in new arrangements. Rhiannon Giddens kicks off American Tunes: Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing, a series of shows this summer, with Hurray for the Riff Raff and Mary Chapin Carpenter, at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Seattle tonight. Mavis Staples then joins the artists for the remainder of the tour, starting at Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend, Oregon, on Saturday. Giddens just announced her new album, Hope Is the Thing with Feathers, to be released September 18 on Nonesuch; you can hear the album track “Carolina Rain” and pre-order the album here. Mary Halvorson joins Myra Melford’s supergroup Fire & Water Quintet at the National Arts Center’s Azrieli Studio in Ottawa on Saturday for the Ottawa Jazz Festival. Halvorson’s new duo album with label mate Ambrose Akinmusire, Slo-Mo Neon Luminate Hoverings, was released earlier this month. Their partnership “reflects a lived-in artistic understanding and empathy,” says Jazzwise, “which is keenly felt in the advanced attention to detail shown in every piece, where ambience, floating sonic layers and ethereal loops are as important as a tender melody or fraught, assertive rhythmic line.”

Punch Brothers take their Unsung North American Expedition tour to Taft Theatre in Cincinnati tonight and Schaefer Center for the Arts in Boone, North Carolina, on Saturday. Cécile McLorin Salvant plays two festivals this weekend, first stopping at Place des Arts, Théâtre Maisonneuve in Montreal tonight for Le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal at before heading to Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York, on Saturday afternoon for Saratoga Jazz Festival. Salvant’s debut orchestral album, With Every Breath I Take, featuring songs by Coleman, Coward, Ellington, Sondheim, Strayhorn, and Salvant , is out today. “Cécile McLorin Salvant's first orchestral album immediately announces itself as a Desert Island Disc,” says Jazzwise in its Editor’s Choice review. Tortoise kicked off their North American summer tour in Brooklyn last night and plays three shows this weekend: at Upper Merion Township Building Park in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, joined by Evan Chapman, for Concerts Under the Stars tonight; Griffin House Lawn in Palenville, New York, as part of Follow the Arrow Music Festival on Saturday; and 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, on Sunday. Their most recent album, Touch, was released on International Anthem and Nonesuch Records last year.
