Tortoise, whose first new album since 2016, Touch, was released late last year on International Anthem / Nonesuch Records, has announced several dates in the United States and Canada this spring and summer. The performances include festival sets at Stop/Time in Iowa City, Warm Love Cool Dreams in Chicago, Follow the Arrow in Catskill, and Montreal Jazz and shows in Brooklyn, King of Prussia, DC, Boston, Burlington, and Toronto. See below for details and visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.
On Touch, the groundbreaking group harnesses its collectivist songwriting approach to reconnect, recenter, and reinvigorate their sound for what is perhaps their most diverse release to date. While there are still excursions into the dusky, elegantly gnarled jazz ambience, Touch is perhaps most remarkable for the post-everything icons' unapologetic embrace of grand gesture. Re-engineered Krautrock, hand-cranked techno rave-ups, and pointillist spaghetti Western fanfares are all imbued with Tortoise's signature internal logic. You can get the album and hear it here.
Band member Dan Bitney stopped by for the Nonesuch Selects video series, in which artists visit the Nonesuch office, pick some of their favorite albums from the music library, and share a few words on their choices. He chose recordings from Jeff Parker; Hurray for the Riff Raff; Cécile McLorin Salvant; Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade; Nonesuch Explorer Series; Hamza El Din; and Kronos Quartet and Terry Riley. You can watch it here.
