Composer John Adams’s latest opera, 2022’s Antony and Cleopatra, is being performed at Theater Koblenz in Germany tonight and tomorrow night. His 2024 orchestral piece, The Rock You Stand On, is being performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Chicago Symphony Center, also tonight and tomorrow. Marin Alsop, for whom Adams wrote the piece as a gift, is guest conducting. Back in Europe, his 1986 fanfare Short Ride in a Fast Machine is performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall in Birmingham, England, on Sunday afternoon. Nonesuch released the first recording of that last piece on the 1987 album The Chairman Dances. The title piece to the album, which can also be found in the 2022 box set John Adams Collected Works, is being performed by the Oregon Symphony and conductor David Danzmayr at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland on Saturday and Sunday; that program, featuring percussionist Colin Currie, also includes Steve Reich’s 1973 piece Music for Pieces of Wood and a new concerto by Danny Elfman.

Composer/pianist Timo Andres is in Canada to perform traditional and contemporary repertoire at Rolston Recital Hall in Banff, Alberta, tonight, with Éric Le Sage and other pianists from Banff Centre’s Art of Piano program. In New York City, his etude Everything Changes is being performed by pianist Jenny Lin at Kaufman Music Center as part of her survey of 100 years of American piano music, also including works by Ives, Rorem, Gershwin, Philip Glass, Nico Muhly, and others.

Emmylou Harris is back in the States from her ongoing Europe farewell tour and has two concerts in South Carolina this weekend: at the College of Charleston Cistern Yard for the Spoleto Festival tonight and at Peace Concert Hall in Greenville on Sunday. She heads to Virginia next week to take part in a songwriters celebration of John Prine at Wolf Trap on Tuesday.
