Pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Christian McBride continue their weeklong residency at the Blue Note in New York City through the weekend, with early and late sets tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. Mehldau’s Ride into the Sun—a songbook record of music by the late singer, songwriter, and guitarist Elliott Smith—was released last week and features performances by singer/guitarist Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, singer/mandolinist Chris Thile, bassists Felix Moseholm and John Davis, drummer Matt Chamberlain, and a chamber orchestra led by Dan Coleman; you can get it on vinyl and CD and hear it here. Mehldau and McBride can be heard on three albums with saxophonist Joshua Redman and drummer Brian Blade: LongGone (2022), RoundAgain (2020), and MoodSwing (1994).

---

A few blocks north in New York City, Laurie Anderson joins nuclear weapons and policy expert Dr. Zia Mian for a sold-out conversation moderated by Matt Whyte at Poster House on Saturday for Sing for Science. Their conversation, drawing from Anderson’s 1982 debut album, Big Science, will explore how scientists and advocates work to prevent the spread and use of nuclear weapons—and how artistic voices like Anderson’s have shaped the cultural imagination around disarmament.

---

Pianist Jeremy Denk performs at the Field Arts & Events Hall in Port Angeles, Washington, on Saturday for the closing performance of Music on the Strait. He is joined by pianist Gabriela Lena Frank, violinist James Garlick, violist Richard O’Neill, and cellist Efe Baltacıgil. The program includes works by Beethoven, Frank, and Fauré.

---

Hurray for the Riff Raff (Alynda Segarra) concludes their tour as special guest of Ani DiFranco, with three Midwest shows: at the sold-out Cahn Auditorium in Evanston, Illinois, tonight; Orpheum Theater in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday; and Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines, Iowa, on Sunday. Hurray for the Riff Raff hits the road with The Head and the Heart in October, bringing the album The Past is Still Alive, and more, to the US South and Southwest.
