Laurie Anderson, Hirshhorn Museum to Present Program Series Inspired by Landmark Exhibition

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, will present a selection of free public programs in conjunction with Laurie Anderson: The Weather (on view through July 31), the largest-ever US exhibition of Anderson's artwork. From late February through July, the Hirshhorn will present performances by Anderson, artist talks, and film screenings. Programs will be held at the Hirshhorn, at partnering DC venues, and online. “I’m so happy to be working with the Hirshhorn and grateful to be able to expand the exhibition into music, performance, and events,” she said. “In many ways, my subject has always been America, and it’s been exciting to get a chance to present my stories in the most symbolic center of power: the nation’s capital—especially in these watershed times."

Composer Adam Guettel's theatrical song cycle Myths and Hymns, the recording of which was released on Nonesuch in 1999, is the central project of MasterVoices' 2020–21 season. In an online staging conceived by the ensemble's Artist Director, Ted Sperling—the music director of the original Nonesuch recording—new short musical films will illustrate the protagonist’s exploration of Flight, Work, Love, and Faith over twenty-three episodes. The first chapter—featuring dozens of artists, including Julia Bullock, Renée Fleming, Norm Lewis, Joshua Henry, José Llana, and Kelli O'Hara—premiered last night and can be seen here. The three subsequent chapters will stream on February 24, April 14, and May 26.

As with many of Guadagnino's projects, the new show features several recordings by composer John Adams, starting with a selection from his 1995 song play I Was Looking At the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky on tonight's episode, and more in the weeks ahead.

Lianne La Havas spoke with NPR's Ari Shapiro on All Things Considered for its Play It Forward series, in which artists share musicians who inspire them. The previous week, spoken word poet Kae Tempest had selected La Havas, saying: "There is something that happens when I hear her sing, which is so uplifting ... this wash of pure melodic brilliance." Shapiro, in describing the song "Bittersweet," from La Havas's new album, says: "I feel like this summer, everyone is kind of trying to do their best to just keep it together. And when the chorus of this track hits, it's like you're not even pretending anymore. Like, the mask drops, and it just feels very real."
