The Crystalline Series: Omar Souleyman Versions
Originally released as the third in a series of imported 12" vinyl releases featuring variations on music from Björk's Biophilia, this digital EP includes versions of three songs—here titled "Crystalline," "Tesla," and "Mawal"—by Syrian musician Omar Souleyman. Souleyman's work blends traditional folk music from the Middle East with more modern electronic sounds. Prefix calls his collaboration with Björk "a wonderful fusion of styles."

Muscle Shoals Sound, the historic Alabama studio where The Black Keys recorded their Grammy-winning album Brothers, is featured in a new video from Oxford American's SoLost series. As with countless musicians who’d ventured there before them, The Black Keys were attracted to the legacy—and the atmosphere—of the studio. John Adams Appears on WNYC's "Soundcheck"; Cleveland Orchestra Launches Lincoln Center Festival Series with His Music

John Adams is the guest on WNYC's Soundcheck today. He'll discuss the Lincoln Center Festival's Bruckner (R)evolution series, in which the Cleveland Orchestra "audaciously couples" (New York Times) his work with four of Anton Bruckner's symphonies. The series began last night, with his Guide to Strange Places, and continues tonight and Sunday with his Violin Concerto and Doctor Atomic Symphony. The Wall Street Journal, previewing the series, calls Adams "one of America's supreme composers." Originally released as the last in a series of imported 12" vinyl releases featuring variations on music from Björk's Biophilia album, this digital EP includes two mixes of "Cosmogony" and two instrumental versions of the song, all remixed by British electronic artist Matthew Herbert, who previously collaborated with Björk on her Vespertine album. Herbert, who is known for incorporating natural and everyday sounds into his work, has produced remixes for REM and Yoko Ono.

Randy Newman is the guest on Words and Music from Studio A from New York's NPR member station WFUV tonight. Newman performs songs from his new album, Songbook Vol. 2, and talks with host Claudia Marshall about the project, which takes a fresh look at both classic and more recent work in new solo takes on 16 of his celebrated songs. Newman is the subject of a week-long series of articles from Filter, which says of the Songbook albums: "These stripped-down versions expose the complexity of Newman’s piano phrasing and put his lyrics at the forefront."

Now, as part of the Guardian and Observer's How I Wrote video series, he performs the song at the piano and shares the beautiful and touching true-life story behind the song. Watch the video here. The A.V. Club offers the uninitiated an introduction to Newman's work, calling him "one of the finest songwriters of his time."

With just over a week to go before the Metropolitan Opera premiere of John Adams's Nixon in China and the Nonesuch reissue of the original cast recording, Q2— the online new-music stream of New York public radio station WQXR—celebrated last week with a weeklong immersion in long-form works by the composer. The series proved so popular, Q2 will air an encore presentation starting today, featuring El Niño, A Flowering Tree, Doctor Atomic Symphony, Nixon in China, and The Death of Klinghoffer.

The Low Anthem concluded a week of events in New York City—which included performances on the Late Show with David Letterman and WNYC's Soundcheck—with a sold-out show at the Allen Room as a part of Lincoln Center's American Songbook series. The show featured songs from the band's forthcoming album, Smart Flesh, and a number of lovely surprises. Brooklyn Vegan says "the unique venue and view ... seemingly prompted the band to up their game just a bit more." The band will return to New York City to perform at the Bowery Ballroom on March 8.
