"They are both some of the best jazz-adjacent creative improvisers I’ve ever heard," de Clive-Lowe told Los Angeles magazine of his first guests. The Magnetic Fields got together separately to perform songs from their new album, Quickies, for Rough Trade's Transmissions series on IGTV. As on the album, Stephin Merritt and other Magnetic Fields band members Sam Davol, Claudia Gonson, Shirley Simms, and John Woo are joined for the session by longtime friends and collaborators Chris Ewen, Daniel Handler, and Pinky Weitzman. From his barn in upstate New York, Denk performed pieces by Bach and led a distanced discussion about what happens to our brains when we listen to the composer's work, joined by neuroscientist Daniel Levitin, music therapist Concetta Tomaino, and longtime recital partner cellist Steven Isserlis for performance and conversation. Reasons to Be Cheerful, the online magazine founded by David Byrne, has announced Now Anything Is Possible, a new series that explores the potential of the changes occurring around the world in response to COVID-19. "This is a catalyzing moment and many of the changes that have been made or contemplated are going to be permanent––some of those are good, and some deeply questionable,” says Byrne. "We at Reasons to be Cheerful of course want to know: how can we keep the good stuff? Who is doing it (it's already happening) and how those ideas and initiatives are working out?"

Jeremy Denk launched Bach's Well-Tempered Lens, a series of online events for WNYC/WQXR's The Greene Space in NYC with a deep dive into Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book I. Denk was at the piano performing and doing analysis and interpretation from his upstate barn. "When I started practicing it, I felt that I was plugged into a kind of contentment that I wasn't used to having," Denk says. "It made me feel a kind of happiness and a kind of at-oneness with time that I wasn't really used to." You can watch it here.
