Amadou & Mariam's Welcome to Mali makes its US debut with its Nonesuch release today. Details cites "the mind-blowing" Damon Albarn–produced opening track as "a soulful and modern masterpiece"; Time Out New York calls it the album's "jewel in its crown." Blurt describes the album as one of "pure sensual joy, a raft of infectious-rhythmed, ebulliently performed funk-rock-desert-electro-dance songs ... in a music so generous, so inclusive and celebratory that you cannot help feeling a wave of optimism." And in difficult times, "It's just what you need ... really ... Welcome to Mali is for the good times, even in bad times."

Amadou & Mariam's latest album, Welcome to Mali, is set for US release on Nonesuch tomorrow. The duo is the subject of a number of feature-length articles about changing perceptions in the West of African musics beyond "world music." The New York Times places them "among the world’s most renowned African musical acts" and says the new album is "less an abandonment of the group’s culture than an updating of it." The Los Angeles Times cites the success of Amadou & Mariam, who "helped define the current African shift," and of Youssou N'Dour, Oumou Sangare, and Rokia Traoré, as examples that "the American cliché of African music is falling apart—or, really, exploding." Detroit Free-Press gives Welcome to Mali four stars, calling it "a spirited invitation to dance away those recession-induced blues and welcome spring ... This is a feel-good album. Don't miss it."

Rokia Traoré, Toumani Diabaté, and Amadou & Mariam have all been nominated for the inaugural Songlines Music Awards, recognizing outstanding talent in world music. Diabaté and Traoré are each nominated for Best Artist, Amadou & Mariam for Best Group. Winners will be chosen by the Songlines editorial team and announced in May. The WOMAD festival, the Awards' co-presenter, will host a live event with a selection of the nominees at WOMAD Charlton Park in July, where Traoré and label mate Oumou Sangare are scheduled to perform.

In an interview on ABC's World News webcast, Amadou & Mariam discuss having met at Mali's Institute for Young Blind People more than 30 years ago and explain the central role of music in their relationship's success. Also featured on ABC's site is a Pitchfork video review of the duo's new album. "Welcome to Mali is a brilliantly eclectic album," says reviewer Joe Tangari. "They have it all, really ... This is the kind of album that makes you feel more connected to the world you live in." "It’s hard to go wrong with Amadou and Mariam," concurs Dusted magazine. "[They] make great pop music, and their new album gives us more of it." The Boston Herald gives it an A.

Amadou & Mariam's new album, Welcome to Mali, receives its US release on Nonesuch in less than two weeks. Time magazine calls the album "a joyous, hook-filled guitar album with impressive range." The review notes that the blend of influences from Western rock to traditional African instrumentation provides "a thrilling sense of dislocation." The duo are also featured in the CMJ.com Spotlight, which insists that "Welcome to Mali is not to be cast off as cultural art du jour, but rather hailed as a global pop phenomenon."

Amadou & Mariam are gearing up for Nonesuch's March 24 US release of their latest album, Welcome to Mali. They're also preparing for a US tour that will include a number of dates opening for Coldplay. Spinner says the pair will have no trouble rocking out for the arena crowds, citing Amadou's love of rockers like AC/DC and suggesting "this shouldn't surprise anyone who has followed the rise of the couple in recent years from obscurity to international sensations. There was always a broad rock and pop consciousness in even their most straightforward music." "People can get into our music because they can hear the rock in it, the pop in it," Amadou tells Spinner. "People can find things they know in it. Maybe that's why it touches them."

Amadou & Mariam have been touring Europe all year and have made their way to the UK this week. The Scotsman's Scotland on Sunday spoke with "Mali's hottest exports" to discuss what "might just be the longest, most fruitful love affair in music," and how that relationship has contributed to their making "some of the most joyous, melodious funk and bluesy pop you're likely to encounter anywhere in the world." This Malian couple, says the paper, has "done for Mali what Buena Vista Social Club did for Cuba in the Nineties."

Amadou & Mariam, whose latest album, Welcome to Mali, is slated for a US release on Nonesuch next month, have just finalized their North American summer tour. The Malian couple will headline six shows in the US and Canada starting with a June 2 show at Chicago's Park West and stopping in Toronto, Montreal, Boston, and New York, with a final show at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, on June 10. They've also been tapped to join Coldplay for two weeks of the British band's own US tour. The Washington Post's rock critic writes of the forthcoming album: "Best thing I've heard this year."

While 2008 may go down as one of the more turbulent years in recent (or distant) memory, or, more optimistically, a time of change, there is much to celebrate in the year in music. Nonesuch artists across all genres have contributed to that and, accordingly, have made their way onto many critics' lists of the year's best. As was just announced, Amadou & Mariam’s new album, Welcome to Mali, will be released in the US this March. It was released last month in the UK to great critical acclaim, taking the top spot on Metacritic's as the year's best-reviewed album. The Observer named it the CD of the Week, describing it as "consistently banging; busily upbeat and lushly-produced." Both Observer Music Monthly and Uncut give the album a perfect five stars; Pitchfork gives it an 8.4 and concludes: "'Inevitable' is a pretty good word for the stardom of Amadou & Mariam. People this amazingly talented and open to new sounds and ideas rarely remain obscure, especially after so many years honing their craft and building their catalog."

The singer Mariam Doumbia and her husband, the guitarist/vocalist Amadou Bagayoko, have been making music together since they first met and fell in love at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako, Mali’s capital, three decades ago. They now perform to crowds of thousands (often tens of thousands) in cities worldwide. Three years in the making, Amadou & Mariam’s new album, Welcome to Mali, has been released in the UK and is being embraced as enthusiastically as its predecessor, the Grammy-nominated Dimanche à Bamako. Because Music / Nonesuch Records releases Welcome to Mali in the US on March 24, 2009.

The Black Keys played the opening day of Lollapalooza in Chicago on Friday in a set that Time Out Chicago reports featured the band's signature "folky-blues, [which] breaks into blown-out acid riffage." Metromix Chicago says that hometown band Wilco's Saturday set showed that the city "has a lot to thank Wilco for." Over the next two weeks, each band will make its way to Brooklyn's popular McCarren Park Pool, which, as the New York Times reports, will transition back to its original use after this summer's shows.
