Devendra Banhart, who made his Nonesuch Records debut with the release of his eighth studio album, Mala, in March, kicks off a three-month-long tour of the United States, Canada, and Europe this weekend. Shows at Aspen's Belly Up and Denver's Gothic Theatre on Saturday and Sunday launch a six-week tour in the US and Canada, heading next to Arizona and to the West Coast for a run up California, Oregon, and Washington; then to the Midwest, Canada, and the East Coast, culminating in a concert at The Town Hall in New York City on June 12.

On June 26, Devendra Banhart begins a five-week tour of Europe with stops in the UK and Ireland, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

In advance of Saturday's tour-launching concert, Banhart spoke with the Aspen Times about varied influences on the music of Mala, which writer Stewart Oksenhorn describes as "otherworldly," with Banhart's vocals imbued with a "haunting tone"; the recording process behind the album; and what to expect as he performs the new songs on tour. Read the article at aspentimes.com.

In Denver, Westword's Tom Murphy, previewing Sunday's concert, says that Banhart, while ever difficult to pin to one genre, does exemplify those who "play constantly evolving music rooted in folk and take it to interesting, cosmic places without consciously trying to go psychedelic." Murphy says Mala "is arguably his most fully realized work to date." Read more at westword.com.

Mala was released to critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, with Pitchfork calling it "Banhart's best record in nearly a decade." Following early four-star reviews in Mojo, Q, the Times of London, and others, the Guardian recently added its own four-star review, describing it as a "triumph." Under the Radar concludes: "He's a singularly idiosyncratic and brilliant songwriter, one hitting an arresting stride on this uniformly superb album."
